Looking at his chart...I have never seen a Berger 200 gr VLD 30 cal.

But I do like the comparo....All the guys comparing the 408 and 416 with priemium bullets against the .50 with mil ball ammo drives me nuts!!!!......good to see the AMAX 50 cal thrown into the mix...make's it an apples/apples deal.

Well, I guess since his chart shows that the max range of the 338 lapua is 1250-1500 yards that somebody better talk to Craig Harrison and tell him he didnt make the 2706 yard kill shot in the Helmand Province in afghaniston.

I dont like any of the numbers he used. Hes got the 300rum out distancing both the 338rum and the 338 lapua. I wonder if thats cause he has a 300rum?

the numbers are based on big game and hunting bullets not people and match bullets the reason the 300 RUM out performs the 338 lapua is because the 210gr vld has a .635 BC and the 250gr accubond has a .575 BC if you use the 300gr match king the 338 lapua will out perform the 300 RUM it just isn't good for shooting large game animals.

Really? Got a bunch of dead elk and deer that would argue otherwise. Did almost lose a nice buck deer that was hit good (crease of the shoulder) with an accubond.

match bullets aren't designed to expand like hunting bullets they are designed for shooting match. If you want to shoot elk with SMKs feel free, I like bullets that were intended for killing animals not paper.

I hate to be the one to say it but...

The 750 gr AMAX is NOT a hunting bullet (but I hear it sure works good).


The Barrett bullet in the 416 is NOT a hunting bullet.

I don't believe the Chetec bullet is a hunting bullet.

The Berger is not a tru hunting bullet..It was and is a match bullet...which just happens to be a freakin awsome hunting bullet!!

So yes...this IS a comparo of match bullets!!!

Well you've got me on that one, "the cheytac and 416 barrett" the 50 cal a-max I really don't know except when it came out people were jumping for joy because now there was an expanding 50 bullet. now the VLD I was just looking at bergers web page and it lists a match target VLD and match hunting VLD.

take a look if you would like. I just try not to use bullets out side of their intentions. After I had an elk get away from using a 168gr a-max. like I said before you can do what ever you like I just like to use a bullet that is advertised for hunting. Does anyone make a hunting bullet for the Barrett or Chetac? It would be interesting to see how it would perform then.

I am with you on the whole Berger thing. I have been shooting the 210 VLD as a hunting bullet FOREVER...and as a match bullet for 3 years now... It has just been in the last few years that I have seen that Berger is pushing some of thier bullets for hunting.....the EXACT same bullets that have been listed as "match" bullets since Mt Everast was just a hill. Just put them in a blaze orange box and called them "hunting bullets"....And I agree with them....they are AWSOME on game.

But, you will find people here who insist that they are not as good.....for whatever reason...maybe a bad experiance...maybe heard Uncle Buck call them down back at deer camp. Whatever....

As far as the CT and Barrett.....I think they all use turned solids...i could be wrong on that one.

I read somewhere a while back that Lost River (when they where still around) was making the bullets for cheyTac, and they had a mono metal turned bullet called the j35 hunting bullet. But they are nowhere to be found anymore.

The difference between the orange box and the yellow box Bergers is the jackets. The orange box is the old match bullets and the yellow box has thicker jackets for the guys that were blowing up bullets because of rough barrels or high velocity. Matt

Rocky Mountain Bullets makes an amax style bullet for 408 and 416 and 50.
Cutting edge makes a hollow point
Im pretty sure if you hit an elk with a fmj or machined solid right in the boiler room its gonna die with any of those calibers. If you shoot it in the a** same scenario as any other calibers.

HUMMM...Looks like if guy wants to build a "larger" gun for EXTREME lr hunting he now has some viable bullet choices!!
