Just bought a DPMS lr-308... probably gonna be taking this gun out to 600yds (maybe a little more) on paper , coyotes and ground hogs.

I'm leaning towards a mark4, but also looking at zeiss conquest, and Sightron III... what power do you guys suggest? do you think a 14 power is enough to shoot paper and groundhogs at 600yds+???

our should I buy something along the lines of a 6.5-20?

I'd run around a 3.5-10x. I've shot lots of woodchucks from 600 and in with 3.5-10x's scopes. Farthest witnessed kill was a woodchuck at 980 with the same 3.5-10x40 Mark4 on my 243AI.

I do a LOT of shooting with 10x scopes and I don't find them a handicap on MOA sized targets to 1000yds. Hand that same 10x to a guy used to running high X glass and he'll just look at you funny. :)

:D 980yrds w/10 pwr that was one very large ground hog not to be covered by the cross hairs at that range. Very good:rolleyes: 400 was about all I could see w/12 pwr redfield w/a fine hair.If you want to have fun try a 6x32x50 and you can watch their nose wigglegun)lightbulb

Getting on a 1.5-2.0MOA target at any range with a 10X scope isn't some kind magic.

The mil-dots subtend just .2MIL which is ~7.5" at 980yds. The actual crosshairs subtend half that. So pasting a reticle on a target that is 4-6 times larger than your crosshair just isn't that difficult. Now can you count hairs, no. Can you put a round on target, yes you can, and that's not a guess. (grin)

I run my 6x scopes out to 5 and 600yds on MOA sized targets and larger. You don't need a target to fill your field of view to make well placed hits. I couldn't imagine not being able to shoot a 'chuck at 400yds with a 12x scope. Though not all glass/reticles are created equal and YMMV.

I don't know where you're from but we are talking woodchucks here.....and they ain't that little. :D

If one of your uses will be coyote killing I would sugest the 3.5 x 10 Leupold. My main carrey gun for coyotes is a RR AR with a 3 x 9 Leupold on it. I have killed several coyotes past 200 yrds. and a couple right at 300 with it and have yet to kill a coyote with the scope set on anything but 3X. When shooting at running coyotes field of view is far more important than magnifaction.

14-16x should be more than adequate.

Buy the best quality glass you can afford and get a mil dot reticle or perhaps the zeiss with the varmint reticle and you'll be a very happy camper.

I shoot prairie dogs out to 400-500yds with a 3.5-10x44 conquest with a 204 Ruger(CZ 527 varmint), and pretty much anything I want from coyotes on up out to 1000yds with a 4.5-14x44 conquest on my 7mmSTW (Custom 700).

I went with the conquest 6-20x50mm on my new LR-260 project gun that I'm building right now because I fully intend to try to maximize it's long range capabilities on everything.

Check the classifieds here for optics and watch E Bay and you can find some very reasonable deals on high quality glass.

Well I'm a Prarrie dog and Marmont hunter. I believe in big tubes like 30 mm with 50, 56, or 60 mm objective lenses. Big field of view. I find my self shooting up near 24X all the time. I've thought about going to 8 - 32X power.

You can't shoot something that you can't see. I had a 3X-12X 50 mm on my first 243 and it really sucked. You could not make out a motionless prarrie dog sunning its self laying on the side of it's burrough at much over 300 yards. When their fur is the same color as the dirt they can even run and stop and you can't tell if its a dog or a dirt mount. Yes, the cross hairs also completely cover them up out there at 300+ I yanked scope off and replaced it with 6-24X 56 mm

I believe that people that love and brag on low powered scopes have never used a higher power with big objective lenses. So they just don't under stand.

With a 24X scope you can see a .277 or 30 cal. hole on paper at 200 yards without a problem. with 24X I can see .22 and .243 holes appear on paper at 100 yards. I don't have to get up and look through a spotting scope to see where I'm shooting.

THANNKS guyS, I decided to go with the 6.5-2-x50 Mark4.... Just trying to figure out what HEIGHT of rings I need to mount the scope on my LR308?? Im worried about clearance and cheek weld, probably burris xtr HIGH rings???

Im not really a fan of those burris rings, either way with your scope I think you could use lows but medium height at the most.

budlight, thanks for the link

pyroducks.. What dont U like about the burris rings? Ive read pretty good reviews... what ring would you suggest?? whats ur oponion on the mark 4 rings?

This will be my first semi that i have mounted optics on..from what I have read, one concern with the mounts is that they are high enough so that the shooter gets a good cheek weld with the AR platform

I was really interested in the burris xtreme rings as well. I asked around heard good things about them. But before I ordered them I talked to a gunsmith (who is a sponser on here) and asked about the burris rings. He said he had tried 3 sets of them, all horrible, one set was so bad that he couldnt even lap them and said if he had tried to use them he probably would have destroyed the scope, he threw them away and said he will never try them again. There is also this thread on here " http://www.longrangehunting.com/forums/f18/vortex-pst-69694/ " this guy had a similiar expierence and said " After mounting another scope in some different rings and bore sighting everything lined up nearly perfectly with the reticle centered. Threw the rings I had on the PST (Burris Extreme Tactical) back on the EGW 20MOA mount to check them out. They looked out of alignment to the naked eye. I placed a machinist rule against the rings and what do you know the front ring was off to the right of the bore and the rule caught air on one side when laid flat down the rear inner ring side.

Turns out Scott had a similar conversation with another customer less than two weeks ago. Same Burris rings and another bad alignment issue. Probably the last time I go with burris extreme tactical rings. I'm not sure I could even get this much error lapped out. It is something I should have checked before I got everything mounted. I was just so excited I didn't slow down and do all the checks I should have. I also should have caught it zeroing but again I wasn't paying much attention to the corrections required. I was just having a great time with the new toy. SHAME ON ME!! "

Now Im sure some people, maybe lots of people, have had a good expierence with these rings but I didnt want to gamble. I went with the "vortex rings" made by seekins, being is I got the viper 6.5-20. I know that people swear by the nightforce ultralights, I cant really comment on the mark 4 rings sorry.
