Well i was looking at getting my 7STW Maid into a 338 Norma off my 700 long action but no smith liked the idea so hear is my ? 338 rum what twist barrel for 300gr bergers ? barrel would be 26'' fluted. What kind of velocigy can i get 2700-2750 will that get me out to 1300 yd with enough foot pounds to still kill a elk ? thanks for input. Joe PS this would be a pack rifle i have a 338 AX FOR AMBUSH.

Why not shoot a larger 7mm bullet and keep STW since you already have a 338 Allen. I hunt with my LR, but when I am on a timber hunt I grab my 325wsm, light and fast, the 7mm, is a great caliber, why 2 338's.

I have a 30" barrel on my RUM and push the 300 SMK a touch over 2800 so your estimates with the Bergers sounds about right.

My barrel is 1:10 which works great with the SMK's.

Newshooter, the 338 rum would be your most economical choice, it has more case capacity than the norma, and is probably more available, norma only came out in 2009. My NM shoots a 300 a 2725 ok and has 1764=E @ 1300 yrds. 338 rum should do that or better. Your 7 STW IS A 1000 yrd type rifle. I have hunted NWMT MY hunting life and 850 is my farthest shot on a elk, 340 WM, would have no problem using it, has credit for 1/2 my 30+ ELK, other 1/2 archery.

My accuracy load out of a rem 700 26" factory barrel is 2730 fps. I can push it to 2800 fps. It has plenty of power to kill an elk as far as you can hit it. Same as the 338-300 RUM and 338 Lapua.

I realey like to shoot long range alot. The 7mmstw barrel will ware out to fast. I will put 300 to 500 rounds through it in a year i would like to have it last 5 to 6 years before rebarrel. I love to shoot my 338AX BUT i do not want to shoot the abs barrel out of it. The 338AX Shots 1/2 moa out past 1400 yards. I whant a light carrie rife 8 to 10 pound. Joe

You haven't talked to the right "smith" then. A 338 Lapua can be built on the Rem 700 action

My experience precisely with the same factory sporter Rem 700.

My accuracy load is a much 50 BMG as I can get in the case and severely jamming a 300 Hibred into the rifling.

It's also my carry gun. The 270 AM is relegated to deer and predators from ambush.
The 375 AM is relegated to anything I want to shoot with it. Big, small or in between from ambush. :)

Roy, I thought you were shooting Retumbo in your 338 RUM

I was but I screwed up a couple of things once and it worked so well I've stuck with it.

First mess up was pouring BMB into the RCBS Chargemaster. But checked some charts against what I had been using and said 'why not?'

Second mess up was neglecting to remember  I had been messing with my seating die. When I got to the bench I couldn't close the bolt. A quick check revealed the seating was too long. I use a pretty light neck tension so just forced the bolt closed. Took a little effort but not real excessive.

This shoved the 300 bergers in as far as the neck tension would allow. With that specific powder I thought/hoped that pressure wouldn't be too much and lit one off.

Pressure was well within my limits, actually not even high. The POI was dead center zero @ 200. I fired two more to confirm group. Was well under 1/2 MOA. ES was in single digits.

I left things as they are. I hope it doesn't bite me later on as so far I've fired every shot chambered. And for the ones I've tried the bullet came out with the case. This test was done at home with necessary bullet extraction tools readily available.

Roy, I like your technique, probably saved you hundreds of hours on load development:D

Man with that many elk to your credit, I want to go hunting with you.
