Well guys, my first attempt at this thread got deleted inadvertently. Here goes again.

It started a couple of weeks ago as I tripped across this particular forum. I've had a long time affair of the heart with single shot pistols, mostly for hunting. I've shot targets too but never competed. I shot my very first whitetail buck with a Contender and handloads almost 20 years ago now. I have put together a small collection of XPs over the years and hunted extensively with them. But then the real long range bug got a hold of me and I went back to the long sticks.

So the Saturday after tripping over this forum, I'm hangin out with Jerry Stiller at his shop shootin the bull about all things that go bang. (For those who aren't aware, Stiller makes our Thoroughbred Custom Actions to our spec - as he does for many other custom makers) I asked him something about the dimensions of XPs vs Model 7/700 actions and he proceeds to tell me that he once made exactly ten Predator XP actions and that they are different length than a model 7. I was contemplating putting together a custom pistol on one of our short Thoroughbred actions. We couldn't find any details on the internet quickly and then he remembers that he has one stuck in the corner in the back of the storage area. He goes back to find it and to his surprise, he finds three of them.

So, i bought all three. Two have magnum bolt faces and one has a standard 308 face. It gets better. They all have a real rear tang (no need for the goofy center screw) and the front face to bolt handle slot is exactly XP length. I consulted with Scott McRee and determined that his XP chassis will support the rear tang. So I bought three of them yesterday. i also ordered up a center grip HS stock. If need be, a center screw can also be used. I was back out at Stiller's this week and we located two more XP bolts with standard faces. I'm getting those as well. Oh, and we have full length 20 moa picatinny rails for each of these also.

I plan to build one for my collection and offer the other two for custom builds. jerry isn't planning on building any more of these (unless someone wants to order a minimum of 50 actions - believe me I tried). The possibilities are pretty wide. You could have a switch barrel / switch bolt setup. If we put a 16.5" barrel on one with a McRee chassis, you could have a convertible XP pistol rifle. I'm sure you guys have already done this with regular XP actions but I thought it would be pretty cool to have one of ten Stiller Predator XPs. Definitely something my other handgun pals can't show up with.

Please let us know if you would like one of these built to your spec.

Best Regards
Dale

TH,
Good for you.
Looks like you made a good find.
I really enjoy the bolt specialty handguns combined with distance=Great Fun!

I think my first build will be a 30BR with 12" 8 twist tube. I will be able to have almost 308 level performance on one end and load heavy bullets with trail boss for whisper performance with my 308 can.

For the second barrel, i'm thinking 16.5" in either 6.5-284 or straight 284.

Any thoughts from you guys?

Thinking out loud:

On your second barrel, you can't go wrong with either chambering.
All depends what you want it for.

I would go with an 1-8 for the 6.5 and 1-9 for the 7mm.
If you want to add the LR component in the 6.5-284 I would do a compromise throat for the 130 VLD-140 class of bullets.

Even if you just set it up for the 130 Berger you couldn't go wrong.
They are awesome all around bullet for pd's, steel through mule deer (not used them on elk, but I would though).
The 140-142 class bullets would be just seated a little deeper whic has not hurt accuracy for me.

If thinking LR some would want you to do compromise throat for the 284 Win from the 162 A-max to the 180 grain Berger/JLK.
In the 284 I would for myself throat it for the 162-168's.

If you are setting this pistol for general hunting and shooting, then you would likely go a different route.
