i just took over a model 700 270win, thinking about making it into another caliber. would be used mainly for whitetail with shots up to 500yds max,
any suggestions????

Nothing wrong with the 270 for 500 yard whitetails but if you feel like toying with another caliber on the 270 bolt face then there is a whole host of great options. The 280AI running 162 AMAX's, 30-06 running 208 AMAX's, 284 Win running 162's, 308 (178 or 208) , 708 (162), 260 (140), 6.5x284 (140) are all great 500 yard whitetail calibers.

For a long action standard bolt face 500 yard whitetail rifle, the 280AI and 30-06 would be my top 2 picks in that order.

6-06 shooting the 115 VLD
6.5-06 Shooting the 130-140 VLD's

For more juice you could improve both chambers.

I also Like the 25-06, just more bullet choices in 6mm & 6.5mm

if left at 270 what bullet and weight would you recommend

Bullet selection is still a little poor but something in the 130gr would be best for deer size game
and 150gr for Elk size game.

The 280 or 280 AI would be a good choice with lots of bullets and ammo availability and no action
or bolt work if you were going to install a custom barrel.

The 280 is simply a 270 necked up to .284 with a little longer case body(More capacity) and will
push heaver bullets a little faster than the 270.

Just a suggestion.

For the 270 Win on deer out to 500 yards I would pick either the Sierra 130 Game King or the 130 Nosler Ballistic Tip. I have killed deer with them both and they will do the job if you put them where they are supposed to go.

I've had excellent results with the 130gr Bergers on Whitetails out of a 270 Win.

My son nailed one at 278 yds. We have to work really hard to find longer shots. But, that load should still be >2,000 fps and >1,300ft-lbs at 500yds. So, I wouldn't have any worries about the bullet performing.

The exterior baliistics will be very close to each other.

The difference in my opinion is that you can get brand new Lapua brass for the 6.5x284 without having to fireform or neck down.

That's a huge advantage over the 6.5/06 in my book.

do u have any load suggestions with the 6.5x284? would you shoot the 140vld or the 140 accubond? any idea of the velocity,or what powder would be the best to use

I use mine for punching paper, but I have a Kreiger barrel that I'm going to use for a hunting rifle someday soon.

I use Lapua brass, CCI BR2 primers, H4831sc, and 142gr SMKs loaded to about 2940 fps.

For hunting, I would use 140gr Bergers. While the Accubond has a strong following, I suspect the Berger will expand better at longer distances (lower impact velocity). But, someone else might want to comment on that.

I shoot a 270 Win also, and what I am using is 140 Accubond, real glad with its results. No big upgrades on the rifle. Mod 70 Pre-64 Win, standard barrel, 22 inches, pillar bedding, free floating, worked on the trigger a little bit, and is releasing at 2 1/2 pounds. Shooting Sub MOA at 100 yards. The load I am using is Winchester brass, CCI primers, IMR 4831 powder - 56.5 grains, with 140grains Accubonds, muzzle velocity 2856 fps.
At 500 yards you have to dial in my rig 8.26 MOA, energy 1238(ft-lbs).
Deer die like lighting striked them.
Hope it helps.

I'm with JE Custom on this one. .280 all the way. Much better bullet selection in the .284 arena, and a more versatile calliber.
