I have always wanted a model 70 but I have been less than impressed with what has been coming out of New Haven the last 10 years. Well with the new guns being built at the FN south Carolina Plant on state of the art equipment I have heard great things about these guns so I picked up a supergrade. I wanted a classic caliber for the "riflemans rifle" so I skipped the WSM's and went for the .300 win mag.
With Gloss metal on Walnut I knew it had to have a pretty gloss scope. I called the guys at Leupold custom shop and had them build me a VX3 4.5X14X40LR with a custom reticle. I had them match the reticle to a 180GR Nosler accubond with a BC of .507. 2960FPS. 200 yard zero with holdover marks for 300, 400 & 500 yards. Dual dovetails properly lapped and aligned and here is my newest addition. Can't wait to shoot it....
I am new around here and hang out on Missouriwhitetails.com, Saubier.com, 204ruger.com, the campfire of course. I am an avid whitetail hunter, mainly focused on bowhunting but I love rifles and have a pretty good stable of quality rifles ranging from Coopers to custom Remingtons, Tikka's, Kimbers a Salvage or two, some high end and custom AR15's in 5.56 and 204 and a few other various makes and models. I love small calibers because I do go on a Prairie Dog shoot in Western Nebraska with my sons every year. Hunt Pheasants in Nebraska every year with clients and am going on my first Mule deer hunt in 2012 in the Big Horns in Wyoming. I am a reloader of course and pretty much only load metallic for rifles. Long Range shooting interests me and I have smoked some prairie dogs at some long distances and we shoot a gong at my farm in the summer for fun. Never have claimed to be an expert marksman but I like good equipment that enables me to do the best I can. I am 40 years old, father of four and am an executive for DoD contracting company that sells telecom and IT services in support of our war fighters all over the world. Been in this business for 23 years and literally started at the bottom and worked my way up right out of high school. I thank God and hard work for my success and count myself lucky to be employed these days.
Anyway that is my introduction to the site and I look forward to making some new friends that share my passion for precision rifles and everything that goes with them. This gun is just something I have always wanted as the model 70 holds a great place in the bolt action rifle history books. Either this gun or my Cooper 280 Ackley is going to kill my first Elk in the not too distant future.
