Budget build idea......

I've been lurking here for a while now and finally decided to join. So far I love the forum.

I am very new into the game of long range shooting, and am on a budget. I can't buy a rifle right now but have an idea and wanted to run it by all of you to see what y'all thought about it.....the gun will be used for hunting( whitetail, and if I ever get to go elk and mulies) also wanting to punch paper at 600-1000 yards someday......

I am looking at a buying a Stevens 200 in .308 and modifying the stock something like the Savage Tactical Rifle Project article.....only I'd like the stock to look more like a B&C medalist.....I'll most likely float and bed the barrel as well......
As far as scopes go I have 4 in mind......
Bushnell Elite 3200 5-14x40 Tactical, Bushnell Elite 4200 6-24x40 AO, Leupold AR 3-9x40 and Nikon Buckmasters 4.5-14x40.......all of these scopes I found for around $300 to 375 and can't spend much if any more than that.....if you can reccomend a good scope with variable power and a mild-dot reticle priced around 350 please do. Also would kind of like target nobs but I don't know if they are really needed for long range shooting.... I was planning on using burris tactical rings and an EGW 20MOA base.......so how does all of this sound any reccomendations would help......

Have you looked at Meuller scopes? The 4.5-14x40 APT sounds like it fits the bill as well as your budget.

I have but I wasn't sure if this scope would hold up to the .308.......because I really don't want to have to buy another scope in a few years.......

Try finding a good deal on the Nikon Monarch...they come in mildot as well! Very good glass compared to a lot of scopes. Track well also.

I have a millet 4-16 x 56 on a 7RM that works great. The buck gold one sell for about 250-280. I have been looking into the Vortex crossfire also. Midway has them in a 6-24x50 for 199.99. I have read several reviews and they seem to be good scopes for the money. Both of these scopes have a 30mm tube. A buddy of mine bought a 4-16x50 nikon monarch from natchez a few months back for like 350. It had been refurbished but still had the factory warranty. Not sure if they still have them but it is a good scope for the price if they do.

I've looked at the millet and vortex as well and both seem like good scopes to me......I just hadn't heard alot about them thanks.

Also not trying to be a pain I would like to know what y'all thought of the rifle and what I had in mind with it....also the cartridge......I know its not a high end rifle but I've heard many good things about these rifles.......Thanks

i only know remington build. scopes- i have several elite bushnells. great for the money; only problem is side focus which you will probabaly eventually want are a little more.

First of Welcome to LRH, it's a great place!!

The 308 is a perfect place to start, it offers a long life of stable accuracy that will make the learning process much easier. As far as the stock is concerned you can make it look and function a lot like a B&C, I shot dry wall screws into the stock on my Model 12 and made deep scars in the plastic so that I could mold JB putty to it, I made a more vertical grip with a palm swell almost identical to the B&C. Did the same treatment to the comb to raise my check weld. Bedded two arrows in the forend and poured it full Devcon, bedded the whole action then painted flat black. Worked out great till I got a B&C.

As far as optics the EGW base will need bedded but that is super simple and you will need 20 MOA, Burris rings should work out, I use the Weaver tac rings but they are similar and I really like how lightly the larger tac rings hold your optic.
The scope it's self I would chose the Nikon or better yet a WOTac 4-14x50, it is more optic than the others listed and much better for hunting, it has a more dependable warranty which at the 300 dollar level a guy has to look at!

first, i am not a fan of 308, but for what you describe it will do and i don't really want to get into a 308vs??? thread

second, as this is your first venture into "long range" i would suggest spending 1/3 to 1/2 your budget on a scope. leupold makes some really nice scopes with turrets and you can find them reasonably priced.

third, you really need turrets and need to learn how to use them

fourth, it's all about experience. meaning practice, practice, practice. 1,2 & 3 don't mean squat without 4

I have ~ 100 rounds of . 208gr A-Max using H1000 and so far so good atop my .300 WM.

How is this done??? Also I really liked that WOTAC scope and it looks like it would be perfect for this build should I ever be able to get started....Thanks


Also most likely going to start to reload with dad so the practice, practice, practice won't break the bank to bad

It's simple, you coat the action with a release agent and the bottom of the base in Devcon or something similar, coat the screws and holes like crazy with release agent and mount the base and lightly tighten the screws. This will fill the small voids that are on the action due to polishing and allow your base to sit nice and tight without tweaking anything and backing out the screw. Same principle as bedding the action. Clean up around the edges while it is still soft and you can't see any trace of it.
This is my LR rifle, Savage Model 12 270 WSM, WOTac optic, Weaver Tac rings on EGW 20 MOA base. Allumahyde coated in B&C Medalist. It should give ya a little idea what the package looks like

Alright thanks.....wow I realy like that rifle......I have a .270 but wasn't sure how it'd do for a long range rig, compared to something like a .308.......and I could always use another gun

The 270 works great but in the WSM form it burns barrels a little faster than one would like. Just starting out the 308 is wonderful to learn on, it seems to be an easy going chambering, you don't have a ton of LR hunting snort in it but you really don't need that right of the bat, you need a good rifle that you can learn the fundamentals on without it changing every few hundred rounds, learn the basics like trigger control and form and ballistics, learning how to read the wind is important!! Going with a Savage allows you to go to a more powerful LR hunting chambering to match your LR skills!
