SAVAGE 5.7x28

Savage is now listing the 5.7x28 as one of their cartridge choices. However it doesn't show what rifle it will be in. Does anybody have any insight as to what this rifle will look like? I think this could be an awesome small game/ varmint rifle.

My only experience with the 5.7x28 is in my PS90, what I do know is that it's an accurate round even out of the PS90 (terrible trigger). I know it doesn't answer your question but if I had to guess I'd say the same action they use for the 22 Hornet?? maybe??

Thats kind of what I'm figuring too. I just hope not. That Model 25 is a little different. I would rather see a dedicated super short action made for it.

A brand new action for a relatively new cartrigde is stretchin it a little... but who knows? Savage has brought us several suprises (for the good) in recent years....

I'll still put my money on the model 25

Your probably right. Its just that I like Savage and I don't own a model 25. I've never known anyone who had one, and I've never seen one on a gun shop rack. I just hope that putting it in that rifle doesn't condemn it to failure before it gets a chance.

I understand completely, I am a Savage fan as well (I have 4), I think I got the chance to handle the 25 in 22 Hornet but I know i didn't shoot it, the action is a FUNKY design but I believe that if it didn't shoot well Savage wouldn't put their name on it. I would really like to get my hands on one to play with just for kicks, I wouldn't own one as i'm a southpaw & the 25 is RH only IIRC.

Yeah I'm pretty sure when this thing comes out I'm going to have to have one even if it is a model 25. I think a synthetic stock model will do nice..

Yeah, Model 25, in the Walking Varminter with a 22" barrel (that is what I got)

and the LV-T with that funky thumbhole and a 26" barrel.

I have a lot of experience with the round with my PS90 and FiveseveN. Love it, and can't wait to see it perform as a bolt gun. Elite Ammunition makes some very hot rounds with Barnes Varmint Grenades and even one with a 55 grain Hornady Ballistic tip I think. Could be a heck of a sub 400 yard varmint gun. I haven't shot mine yet, but can't wait till it warms up enough to do so.

two things:

* be aware that the older Savage 25's were low pressure rifles and the had a very weak bolt lock up. Lets hope somebody did a major redesign

* What kind of a case dose the 5.7 x 28 use? I've never seen one in the flesh

Nope, no parent case. As far as the concern on the Mod 25s, I think Savage fixed that a couple of years ago. I am by no means a Savage fan, so I looked into it and it apears it has been addressed.

The pressure with the case is in the 50k realm. I know with my PS90, I can shoot a barnes 36 gr Varmint Grenade out at 3100 FPS. That is with a 16" barrel. Can't wait to see what a 22" will do with the heavier 50 grainers

I got a big envelope from the Accurate Powder folks yesterday, and saw the round in the load data. For the life of me I could not connect it with anything! I did find a drawing of it in metric deminsions, and the case is dead strait! At 7.95mm (.312"), and is actually 28.9mm long (1.137" long). Might be interesting necked down to 14 or 17 caliber. Sounds much like the .223x30carbine wildcat that was around in the mid 1950's

Wrong.........You are thinking about the Model 40 action, where the bolt handle was the locking lug. The Model 25 is a new action with a three lug, front locking bolt made to take a full high power load.

We need to be careful when we make statements on these board to not damage the reputations of the manufacturers
