Kestral with Horus Atrag???

I'm surprised there isn't more interest in this topic, what there sayin is that you've got a weather station and ballistic computer in one unit. All you have to do is input range and angle and it spits out a fire solution and automatically corrects it for changing weather conditions. Sounds pretty fantastic to me.

I'm no expert, but reading the wind is more than just holding up a gauge from your shooting position.

The art seems to be in one's ability to understand what the wind is doing over the entire flight path which may be radically different at various points along the way.

Hence, you need to arrive at an adjusted value for the wind taking all those factors into account.

How does this solution address that challenge?

Thanks
Richard

Sure we all know that judging wind is more art than science, but the fact that this device will input all of the atmospheric conditions such as temp, humidity, and pressure automatically into the ballistic program without having to input them from one device to another is pretty amazing.

Ok.

If you put it that way and you're talking about extreme ranges or variations in elevation/weather that make enough of a difference. ..or possibly, competitive shooting, then it sounds interesting.

Around here, elevation, weather, and distances don't vary enough to bother.

You might just need a differnt range card for cold or hot weather.

Then, there's always the wind to contend with. I assumed that's what the device/program was attempting to do which would be fine if it sends a probe downrange to report back.

Out here in Northern CA any shooting done beyond 800 yards needs to have the current weather input if you want to hit what your shootin at.

I have been looking at these as a viable option for backpack/mountain hunts. Very small and light weight units replacing a few devices! Was hopeing to get more feedback before droping the $$cheese.

Yea I was hoping to get some feedback on the Horus ballistic program, havent heard much about it, dont know if its any good????

I personaly would recomend the ATrag program, Ive used it a few times, and it works amazing. It allows you to build and load data for multiple rifles (barrel length, twist, cal., bore height) and diffrent loads (bc, velocity). Imput weather conditions, moving target data, range, and it spits out a solution in mils, moa, clicks or feet, yards, meters. It also calculates range, using the target size and mil reading. As far as the kestral, i never leave home without one, it might not give you the wind down range, but it will give you everything else and some kind of an idea of what wind looks and feels like. Wind is just something that takes experience to read. The kestral is a tool i used to learn wind.

Absolutely, I have seen guys use these wind meters to test their assumptions along their course of fire when practicing or working up loads. Most will carry them around when out in the field to take a wind reading after judging mirage, grass, trees, flags, etc. Improves wind reading skills.

I will be putting one on order. From what I have read, Atrag is as good of ballistic software as any on the market. I have used several, i.e, Loadbase, Sierra, RCBS, Xball, etc. All good but not portable or practical for changing conditions unless you buy and carry a PDA. And you still have nothing to measure atmospherics. When you hunt in the mountains, density altitude can change by several thousand feet in a day.

I will have 4 pieces of gear in my bag; Spotting scope, binoculars, range finder, and Kestrel 4500 NV Atrag.

Not sure what happened with the link. You can use the hot link in my sig line, go to "NOS store" then to "Software, electronics and instruments". The price is $589 and ships free (orders over $500). There are a few accessories in that category that fit the application as well.
