hodgdon extreme powders

i was wondering what you all think of the extreme powders. do they really do what they say they are supposed to. i am currently shooting a 7 wsm with rl 25. i have read that rl powders are very temp sensitive. i was thinking of switching to h 1000 or h 4831 becasue this is a hunting rifle and most practicing will be in the warmer weather but it could also get very cold when hunting and i dont want to have my poi change when hunting. so are the hodgdon powders a better choice for my situations. thanks

What you have read is true. Alliant RL powders are VERY temp. sensitive. I have some great loads with RL 22 and RL 25 but have started using Hodgdon H 4831 in place of them because of the temp. insensivity. My experience was I developed a load shot great with good velocity in late spring. When I shot the rifle in early winter my point of impact moved about 3 inches. After switching to Hodgdon the problem of point of impact moving was solved. My velocities are a little lower but I DO know where my bullet is going to hit.

I can't say that the RL powders are temperature sensitive because I've avoided them just because they have that reputation. However, I can vouch for using Hodgdon powders with the 7WSM. H1000 works very well for the 160s and 168s and H4350 has proven to be very good with the 150s.

I too hunt in temperature extremes of 70 to 80 degree days for antelope to 0 or -10 for late season elk and deer in Idaho and Montana. My ballistics tables seem more than capable of keeping up with where my point of impact will be through these temperature differences.

I's say that they are!!

I use Varget in my 223 and 308W. , and H4831SC in my 30/06. The long range Palma shooters use Varget in the heat of summer, and no longer shade or even cool their loads. I also have had good temperature tolerance with the VitaVouri powders.

Yes !

I have not found any brand of powder that manages temperature better.

Some of my rifles like other powder better but after some experaminting i always find
a hodgdon powder that shoots as good .

They both make a bang when you pull the trigger.. If you're worried about 1/16" or so, then yeah , switch powders, if you're hunting I wouldnt worry about it..

That may be true at 300 yards, but at the ranges people are shooting on this forum, 40-50 fps difference caused by powder variation is HUGE......Rich

One of the other differences that I have noticed between the RL powders and the Hogdon powders is that I don't get the drastic variance in different lot numbers in Hogdon like I use to with the RL powders. There is no 2 lot numbers that are made by the same manufacturer that are exactly alike but the RL powders drove me nuts with one lot being way hotter or nor as hot as the last jug that was just emptied.

I think that is because they are supposedly seconds bought from Norma; or so I've heard?.......Rich

RE 25 is to slow and dirty (unless you like to clean every 20 shots) and temperature sensitive. Try H4831SC it cures both problems and has excellent accuracy but you will loose 20-40 fps

Love h1000 in my WM. Not just for the temp sensitivity but it is slow burning and give great velocity at low pressure in my .300 wm I am at 80 gr with no pressure signs and 3000 FPS out of 208gr Amax. Accuracy is outstanding. still pushing and running out of case capacity.

I have to jump on this bandwagon.....my 300RUM loved RL25 in the heat of summer but went to hell once it hit 50 and lower. I switched to Retumbo and lost about .1 moa over range but it barely changes in any temp from 90 to 10

I was useing a max load in my .243 with RL19. Took it to Africa in winter and all good. Got home and took the rifle out again in summer and blew the extractor off.

Back to 2209 (H4350). Accuracy not quite as lazer like but still minute of boars head at 300 yards and nil issues.
