Bullet recommendation for cow elk

I got a late population management tag for a cow elk in northern NM. I'm thinking of going with a 338 WM, but I don't have time to do load development. What are recommendable factory loads for this type of animal?

I can't give you any help with any 338 info but I would ask you - do you have a smaller caliber in the 270, 280,30-06 range that is ready to go? I would consider a smaller caliber if I had it versus going 338 and an unknown result I've seen a train car load of elk taken up here in Montana with a lot less than a .338. I have nothing against a .338 and it's performance speaks for itself.

You could go with premium loads but it's a 338 WM so I don't think that premium loads or bullets are required if you don't want to pay for them. I've had good luck with plain old cheap Federals with the 225 power points in them. I wouldn't fear using Rem core lokts either. Whatever you spend I'd say your in good shape to kill a cow elk. Thanks for the replies, my only 30-06 is a Garand, and below that it drops down to a 7x65R which I was going to bring as a back-up. I check out the Federals.

Here's an oldie but goodie that might work.
Federal's Premium Safari Rifle load pushes a 250 grain Nosler Partition spitzer bullet (BC .473, SD .313) at a MV of 2,660 fps and a ME of 3,925 ft. lbs. At 200 yards the velocity is 2,300 fps and the energy is 2,925 ft. lbs. This load has a MPBR of approximately 265 yards.
Kinda spendy.. but if you zero your weapon on the cheap an fine tune with these this should do the job just fine.

Not sure about the accuracy in the garand but if the 7x65 will shoot, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that as an elk rifle......Rich

you do not say what rifle. i would try a couple of the ones like 210-225 grain spitzer. and use the one that groups best .

Have a 338 Win Mag Have used the 225gr spbt for years and has done a good job....
