7mm Rem. Mag.....what primer?

I have seen on here that some people don't use magnum primers for the 7mm RM. Is this pretty typical? Would LR primers work better for RL22, H1000, and Retumbo? I have Federal LR Match and Federal LR primers. As far as Mag primers I have CCI 250, and Winchester Magnum Rifle. What should I go with? Also, what is the difference between the LR and LR Match primers? Any info would be a great help.

There is a List of all the primers with there relitave heat somewhere on this site.with the Fed
215 being the hottest.

With that said I find that cases that have a powder capacity of 65 to 70 grains seem to get
better SD with a cooler primer as long as you are not using a slow burning powder (Like
H50 BMG and H 869).

My best 1000 yard load for the 7mm rem mag was H 4831 and a Remington 9 1/2 mag primer
and 168grain SMKs (There are 3 or 4 other primers that are hotter).

When I tried the 215s it bumped the velocity up but the SDs also went up (SDs were 9 with
the 9 1/2s and it went to over 30 with the fed 210s)

The cases with a capacity of over 100 like the 215s and the 215ms(A little cooler than the
215s).

Some powders are harder to ignite and some experimenting may be nessary.

If accuracy is of the most importance i'd go for CCI BR-2's and RE22 but the CCI 250's will probably do ok, like I mentioned in another thread the 250's are all but identical to 210M's.

I use cci 250 primers. They work well With Imr7828 in my gun. But to each his own they my not work well for what you may work up.

just depends on the load, i gained 60fps over a magnum primer with a winchester non mag but that is with fairly fast powder like rl-15, using rl-22 it might be different just have to chrono and see what shoots best

Haven't loaded yet, but gonna use Federal 215s, Winchester brass, H1000, and 168g SMKs. Gonna chrono them so we'll see.

I say try them all. See what your rifle likes. With the components you listed I would start out with the CCI250 and H1000. This combo worked great in my .300WinMag with 178gn A-Max's.
I used CCI BR2's in my 7Mag Sendero for years with the 150gn Ballistic Tip and 67gn of RL22. This load shot sub .5" and accounted for many head of deer.
Last year (1/19/10) I tried the 150gn BT with 64gn of IMR4831 and 9.5M and got a .178" group. Absolutely the tightest group my 700P had ever shot (for me). I never did chrono this load and my son now has my 700P.
I also got sub .5" and good velocity (3240fps) with that same bullet (150gn NBT), 63.5gn of IMR4350 (Use Caution! .5gn above max) and 9.5M's. This load accounted for a 300-350lb Va. Black Bear. He was at 15 steps and the bullet went though both shoulders and knocked his genitalia in the topsoil!

im told by a reloader friend that cci primers are so hard they can damage my firing pin ? what is the word here on that ?

Your just going to have to experiment and see what your rifle likes with that load, I've worked up loads where rem9 1/2M and fed 215M drove tacks and CCI 250 and fed 215 opened it up. CCIBR2 area good primer to but, to really know you'll have to try different primers and compare them head to head to know. So go ahead and work up your load, if you don't see what you like then try loading up 3-5rnds with each primer with how ever many primers, shoot them round robin at about 200yrds, the paper won't lie to you. The PIA part is when you try a different load, you just might be checking different primers all over again.

I'm not buying the idea that CCI250's damage firing pins though, that just makes no sense.

Using H1000 powder, I have had very good luck with Winchester WLR primers. It seems as though the seven mag can lit efficiently with a standard primer. As a matter of fact, my lowest ES, SD were with the WLR primers, and that was under typical hunting temperatures as well. The WLR, supposedly is the hottest " standard " primer.

In my 7RM I have tested, briefly, the F215GMM and the F210GMM.

Using H4831sc, the load I used shot 1.2 MOA with the F215GMM. Switching to the F210GMM dropped the velocity by about 60 FPS. The accuracy also improved to 2/3'rds MOA.

That has been my most recent loading of the 7RM.

most powders that are developed for the magnum rifles need magnum primers to ensure the proper burn rate. But, if you use powders that are suited for smaller case capicities use standard primers.
With my 7mm rem mag I use rl22 and imr 7828 with mag primers, when I use imr 3031 I use std primers.
Imr 3031? Yes I use 45.0 grns of it with 150 grn sp verry comfortable to shoot verry accurate but it does burn fast wich has a tendancy to heat up the barrel so I only use this load durring cold weather

CCI primers have a harder cup than the others, hard enough to damage the firing? Not even close, they actually work better in some full pressure loads because they don't flow or flatten causing the primer pockets to enlarge like Fed and Win primers will, remington primers are second in line for the hardness of the cup.
Anyway here is what I have found with the 7mm in 24-26" barrels
Imr4350 CCI BR2
Imr4831 Fed210M or WLR almost identical results
H4831 Fed210M or CCI250 almost identical here as well
RE22 WLR or CCI 250 when using less than 65grns
Imr7828 Fed210M or CCI 250
H1000 WLR or CCI250, Fed215Ms are good if using over 72grns
Retumbo 215Ms all the way and for 160grn pills and heavier this combo burns better than H1000 in the shorter barrels, H4831 still wins in the extreme spread category, but Retumbo is close and can net 75fps or so more velocity than H4831.
