what would be the purpose of spacers between stock and action

I bought a model 70 in .243. Someone previously has glass bedded the rifle. Also had a duct tape pressure point built up at the end of the bbl.

My question has to do with some homemade spacers they had in the stock though. Two spacers made from laminated paper at front action bolt and four of them at rear action bolt. This is between the action and stock.. (not on the floorplate side) Curious why these would be in there. If it was bedded this works against the purpose of bedding right?

Sounds to me like they didn't do a very good job of bedding. If you can, take it to a gunsmith and have it professionally done. You might need to buy another stock if they messed yours up too badly.

The only reason I can think of for the spacers is that the screws are too long, and were bottoming out in the action. Perhaps they took too much material out of the stock prior to filling with the bedding compound??

Huh.. Good Point, didn't even think about that to be honest. The Cartridge box under the floorplate does rattle just a touch, wonder if there is not enough pressure on it..

Would that be just as easy as shortening the bolts a touch.. ?

The box mag should be loose and not binding the action.

It sounds like it needs to be Pillar bedded (You can adjust the pillars to hold the action in the
proper place while you bed it. then check the screws for the proper length after bedding is cured.

It is common after bedding to have to replace the screws to get the right length.
