Long Range Hunting with my kids in eastern NC

Our long range hunting here in NC is vastly different from what occurs out west. I just thought I would share some videos we shot last week as my kids and I did a little herd management and freezer filling before the season ended. I am new to videoing so please excuse the quality. Hope you enjoy!

Parker is my 11 year old daughter and John is my 13 year old son.

Jett, that is pretty remarkable.

Tell me about how you got them involved in hunting and how you went about teaching them.

I have had the pleasure of hunting with Jett and John on several occcasions and it is a pleasure. This was Parker's first attempt and as you can see it was a success. A lot of credit goes to Jett. He has worked hard on his hunting set ups and his long range shooting. He has is guns dialed in very well and makes sure his kids know how and has the equipment to make a clean one shot kill. You want go any where and meet any more polite and well mannered kids. I met him about 8 yrs ago and the first time I met John he was only mabye 6 or 7 yrs old and even then I was impressed. Guys just remember he can't do it alone. He has to have a certain amount of support from the better half. While he has one or two of them hunting someone has to take care of the rest. One afternoon I was hunting with Jett and the wife was leaving to start running kids to different activies. Jett said she whould be busy till about 9 that night. Just keep getting the kids involved because it is our future. I guess that's enough telling him how great he is. If I keep it up he want be able to get his ear protection on. Dan

Awesome job by you and your kids!

Anyone can take pot shots and eventually get lucky. But, as one of the other posters stated, there's a lot of work that goes into what you've done and a great sense of accomplishment when it all comes together.

My 14yo son made his first long range kill this year. The actual shot lasted just over a second, but the memories will last a lifetime.

Congrats to you all for a great team effort!

Sorry for the delayed response, but I had lots to catch up on at work after the holidays.

I am pretty sure I came into this world hunting! I remember my Dad carrying me duck hunting and swinging the gun for me as I pulled the trigger. Hunting and fishing has always been an assumed major part of my family's life.

I wish I had a less selfish reason for my involvement w/ long range hunting and my kids. You see, I am used to hunting quite a bit. So when my wife kept having babies (4 at the moment), it became very difficult to maintain my regular hunting schedule. Then one night I saw The Best of The West and a light bulb lightbulb went off! While searching the internet for TBOTW webset, I stumbled onto your incredible site. I found I had discovered the perfect answer to my hunting/parenting problem! What followed has been very exciting, fun and rewarding (and expensive).

I quickly went about building an 8x8 shooting house complete with heat, swivel chairs, carpet, sleeping bags, DVD players with everything from Barney and Sesame street to Real Tree Road trips and lots of snacks! The next step of the process, equipping this ultimate daycare/deer stand with the proper firepower, has probably gone a little too far but has been a lot of fun. These shooting houses/daycares have benches on several sides w/ windows. On any given day, if a kid is not asleep on a bench, you are likely to find the handy work of Nathan Dagley, Dan Glover, Kirby Allen or Shawn Carlock sitting in each window.

As you can see, I have really capitalized off a difficult situation. I have become the ultimate babysitter and hunter all at the same time . I never thought I could score brownie points at home w/ the wife, while spending time in a deer stand. 4 kids, ages 4-13, all playing, fighting, watching DVDs, etc. in a "deer stand" can make quite a bit of ruckus for deer hunting, hence the necessity for long range rifles (and insulated walls). The cool thing about this set up is the deer and bear at 500- 1000 yards never even know they have been hunted! My two oldest children in the videos have been around hunting and shooting their entire lives, so the shots that they are able to make w/ this equipment are not surprising. Hopefully, next year my third oldest (6) will make it on video. Thanks for a great site Len, the ride has been fun and rewarding!

The gun my son is shooting is a 7-300 WSM built by Nathan Dagley. It is built on a trued Remington 700 action with a 28" Brux barrel and Nate's custom brake mounted in an HS Precision stock wearing a Leupold MK4 6.5-20.

The gun my daughter is shooting is also a 7-300WSM. It is built on a Defiance long action with a 28" Brux barrel and Nate's custom brake mounted in a Mcmillan A-5 wearing a Nightforce 5.5-22 NXS NP-R2. This gun was a joint project with Nate doing the metal work and Dan Glover doing the stock work.

Both these guns are shooting 180 Bergers at 2960 fps using H1000. These particular guns and caliber have proven incredibly accurate and easy to reload.

The 6x47 Lapua that I am shooting was built by Dan Glover. It is built on a Stiller Predator short action with a 28" Brux barrel and Nate's brake mounted in a Mcmillan A-5 wearing a Nightforce 5.5-22 NXS NP-R2. This gun is shooting 115 Bergers at 2965 fps using H4350. This gun is a real treat to shoot. Accuracy is amazing with absolutely minimal recoil. Jim,
I am located in northeastern NC about 2 1/2 hours north of Burgaw. We are fortunate to live in an area of intense agriculture with lots of long range opportunities. The fields here are often over 1 mile long. The area is teaming with deer and black bear; however, in recent years this is beginning to change with the "reintroduction" of the Red Wolf. I believe we are beginning to learn in the east what you guys in the west have already learned about wolves!

I know the feeling....my youngest son started shooting my doe's when he was 5 or 6 years old....all at 175 yards. At 9 he killed a doe with my dasher at 514 yards...perfect heart/lung shot. 40 yard death run!!

I can not remember a time when I was more proud or excited about ANYTHING!!!!
