Which scope

What kind of hunting are you into? What magnification are you wanting?

I think Zeiss conquest is a great scope for the money. Nikon Monarch is good for the money too.

I bought a NIB 2nd hand (used) Mark 4, but it was more than 800, by about 50%.

There's alot of good scopes out there under 800 if you don't need 20-25X and other things that go into the higher dollar stuff.

I have bought a couple used Leupolds vx3s off of the optics classifieds here from $ 600 to 750 shipped . The factory warranty is still good on them and you can send them in to the custom shop and change reticle and nobs if you want and still have less than a new scope !

Thanks for the replies. The scope is going to be used on a Savage 308 for 600yds and under hunting and 1000+yds target shooting. I was looking at some of the Bushnell Tactical Elites and the Vortex Vipers but wanted to see how many more lesser know options were out there.

I be thinking either option you were looking at would probably suit you well.

for a 308 at 1000 yds, you'll benefit by making sure you have enough elevation adjustment in the scope though, or get a tapered base.

I have a bushnell 4200 elite on my .243, I really like it and so far it has adjusted great and always returns to zero. This scope doesn't have too much elevation adjustment to work with though. I put a 20moa base on my gun and that really helped. I haven't had a chance to shoot farther than 600 yet but I think I should be able to get out to 1000 if I really want to.

Zeiss Conquest, Sightron, Nikon Monarch, Bushnell Elite 4200 - some are a little more, some are a little less. The Zeiss will probably have the best glass but will be on the high side $$ wise.

For that type of shooting and with that caliber, the Conquest will probably need a 20 MOA base to get to 1000 becuase it doesn't have that much internal adjustment. Great optics though. The Vortex Viper will get there, I have 2 of them and really like them a lot. For 800 bucks you could almost get two of them. The Sightron SIII are really good but don't expect much on the resale market, of course that means you might get a deal on a used one. Personally I don't know anybody who is using a Nikon or a Bushnell at 1000. There probably are folks out there that do but I don't know anybody who does at the ranges I shoot nor have I heard of anybody at Nationals or in the Tactical matches.

I used the Nikon Buckmaster 6-18x40 for two years with good consistency before I got my Vortex viper. I would suggest the target dot if you just plan to twiddle and not fuss with a ballistic reticule. My cousin has been using the Bushnell 4200 Elite Tactical for 3yrs no problems to 1100yds. With an $800 budget, I would look into the Viper PST or the Sightron 8-32 SIII. I know at sniper central they sell rifle combo's with the Elite 3200 5-15 for long range. Another scope that comes to mind is the Falcon Menace. It's not as expensive, but has made a decent splash. It looks like a pretty nice scope to be honest.
