260 bullet help

Howdy everyone,

I am about to start my first custom rifle and need some bullet selection help. I am putting on a Hart bbl. chambered for the 260 cartridge and am going to leave it at either 25" or 26" with a muzzle break and it will be used for coyotes, p-dogs, the occasional deer(whitetail), hogs, and long range targets.

If anyone has any thoughts on bullet brand, type, or weight please let me know.

I've had good results with a variety of 139-142 match bullets for long range prairie dogs and targets. The 120 Nosler Ballistic Tip has also worked well for Prairie dogs out to about 850 or so. For deer I'd be inclined to try the 130 AccuBond or one of the Berger lineup of huntinng VLD's depending upon your preference for bullet behavior.

Make sure that you get a 1 in 8 twist barrel, if you plan to shoot 142 grain bullets.
I have a Rem Model 7 with a Hart barrel chambered for 260 Rem.. It is a great gun to shoot. My Hart barrel is a medium contour that makes it heavier than the original barrel so the recoil is very light. Do you need a brake on this gun?

My gun lovers the 120 Sierra match bullets with Hunter powder. It also likes 130 Accubonds and 120 Nosler Bt with RL-19 powder.

The Accubonds make a very good deer load.

Speaking of Hunter powder; how does it rate for velocity, accuracy and temp stability compared to other powders of the same burning rate? Have you used it in the short mags?.......rich

The 100 gr Sierra HP is wicked for expansion. RED MIST. The 120 Nosler ballistic tip is a great deer killing bullet if they are in the 250 lb and under class. The 130 Accubond would be the bullet I would choose for everything a little bigger up through elk. 130 to 140 Berger VLD for long range paper work. I like a bullet with a little more strength myself for game shooting unless it is really long range which in my book is over 500 yards. I am shooting a 6.5X55 but it is the same velocity as a 260 Rem.

I don't have enough experience with Hunter to answer all your question. However, I have tried it in my 260 Rem as expressed with very good results. With the 120 match bullets I am getting 1/2 inch 5 shot groups with 44.0 grains of Hunter. I looked back through some of my data and found that I have also tried 46.0 grains under 120 Nosler BT's with a velocity of 2957ft/sec out of my 22 inch barrel. The accuracy of this load was good but not as good as the 44.0 grains with the match bullets.

I have also tried Hunter in my 300 WSM. My data showed I shot 69.5 grains with 165 Hornady SP. My accuracy was not good enough so I did not continue to try other loads. I was happy with the powders that I was using. My velocity for this load was over 3100 ft/sec..

I have not shot these loads at different temperatures and checked velocities.

The 120 B-Tip has been a very accurate bullet for me. I use VN N-140 powder and get 3000 fps out of it. The last group I shot with this bullet was 3 shots at 525 yards and measured 1 3/8".

This load will work for coyotes out to any practical range, and deer to 600 yards.
