Alright fellers I finally got my competition rifle finished and shot in. It is a 6.5x47 Lapua and it isnt too hard on the eyes. Here are the specs on her:
Remington 700 LH short action
Huber Concepts two stage trigger
CDI bottom metal with AI 10 round DBM
Lawton custom contoured barrel finished at 29"
McMillan A3 with 3 way butt plate and integral adj cheek piece
Badger base and rings
as of now topped with Leupold MK4 6.5-20 because it was a paper weight
Load development...
Since I dont have internet out on my ranch(typing this on my dads computer over the break) I have to depend on my iphone to keep me in the loop on this website. And of course since I have limited service in my house, I cant look up data that often. Anyways, I was not able to find what I wanted on this sight so i went over to 6mmbr.com and only scratched the surface of what I needed. It seems that everyone and their freakin wifes poodle is shooting R15. Well that is fine and dandy for all those left coasters whos temp stays pretty even year round. Well I live in central Texas and as most of you guys may know, our weather is not quite as cooperative. So I went ahead and bought one pound of R15 and a pound of H4350. So i broke the barrel in using David Tubb's method and this is what it shot in barrel break in at 100 yards with 10 shots...

Well I was instantly excited because of the potential this rifle would have. So after finishing the break in I started working up loads with R15 just to make sure it wasnt going to work. Well long story short I shot 123 scenars, 130 bergers, and 123 match kings at all varying charges and depths. For whatever reasons the R15 didnt give me accuracy that I wanted. It would not shoot any of the loads under .5" On top of that the velocities were all over the place with some loads spanning over 100 fps.
So on to H4350. I soon found this was the powder for my rifle as it shot all loads tested under .5" extreme spread. Well due to having only limited amounts of Bergers and scenars left, i kept what few I had to shoot at LR. So i had to do a load development with the Sierras. I started around 38 gr and bumped up .3 at a time. I noticed that as i went up, the groups kept shrinking and the velocities kept getting closer together. Just what i wanted. well after getting to 42 even it shot 3 consecutive groups that were a single hole with 5 shots and the vel was all within 15 fps of 3020 (on all 15 shots). My work here is done. 42gr of H4350 seated .1" jump into lands. Off to some distance work now.
Here are two different 3 shot groups with 123 scenars, and 130 bergers(last 3 of each I had left..)
scenars are the splash on lower left and bergers just upper right. Both not bad for 550 yards.
So not too bad... It gets better
So now time to shoot the Seirra Match Kings. I honestly thought these would finish last amongst what I tested. Not true. Finished first by a long shot(no pun intended)
Here is a 600 yard 10 shot group. It went at 2.1"(sitting just above the circle plate). There are some other splash marks a little lower on the plate but they were from my 7mm at 1000 yards. Please forgive...
So it does great at 600. I was pretty pumped at this point. Now on to 1000 for the final conformation. I was shooting at my hog silhouette where I teach my long range classes. I had fair conditions. 55 degrees, 32% humidity, 300 ft altitude, 29.88 BP, wind from 2' at 4mph holding steady. Dialed up 27+2, over 2+3. Sent three shots down range quickly before the wind changed. Drove up to the target and my knees almost buckled on me!!!
Wow a sub 3" group at 1000 yards! I am so excited about this rifle its not even funny!!
Yesterday I shot a big cull 7 pt at 598 yards and dropped him with this rifle. Hi shoulder shot. Weighed 216 lbs. not a bad kill for the first one with this rifle.
