I have had 3 of these barrels and they shoot very good could hit 12 oz. coke can filled with water at 500 yds. with each of them, that is with no wind.

I live about 1/2 hour away from E.R. Shaw...Have been to the plant several times...and have used 5 or 6 of their barrels...For your intended use they will work fine...Buy it and dont worry about it. The barrels that I had ...all were fairly accurate, in fact one in .358 that I used for a 35 Whelen AI. would shoot 225 Sierra BT'S Under a inch @ 200(3 shots) at 2750 F/SeC... hmmm come to think of it, WHY in the hell did I trade that thing??? Enjoy your new barrel.

What's your opinion of the quality & service of these barrels. I have a model 7 that I want rebarreled to 20" stainless 308. Will use it for whitetails at max 300 yds but most shots will be 50 yds or under. Price is around $ 275 and I thought that wasn't bad.

Why pay $275 for ER Shaw when for same money you can have a Hart, Lilja, Spencer, Broughton, or Krieger?

was 275 just for a sporter barrel blank?

BTW--tony boyer just used douglas barrels at the super shoot, so you might consider that for your economical barrel purchase. last time i checked, wholesale on a douglass SS match was 200$

A quick visit to the ER Shaw site will show that at $275 it is installed and finished.

The cost of a match barrel is that much and you still need to install and finish. Total bill could be closer to $650. for a short range hunting rifle, a bit much.

I have used Adams&Bennet barrels and they have all been sub MOA shooters. So there are many economical barrels for the shorter range hunter.

The only thing that I have heard as a negative for Shaw is that they can be very slow. You would want to ask about turnaround time before sending stuff away.

If your smith is charging $375 to chamber and thread you need to find a new smith now! Mine will be happy to do it and increase his prices and still charge you less than $650.

My SS 30" Spencer that is 1.875 inches tapered to 1.5 chambered and installed was still less than that. The blank cost $450 due to large diameter.

Most reputable smiths charge $135-$175 max for chambering and threading.

OK for another $50, blue the chrome moly barrel.

However, if for a hunting gun and chambered, blued and installed, $250 is reasonable. But not for just barrel.

bountyhunter, the difference would be for install, finish, and bluing. That number of course varies depending on the action, the cost of the barrel, the amount of work needed and the type of finish. But it is pretty close. One cost that is often overlooked is postage. With the weight of our toys that can add up too.

The best recommendation I can make is Go on line and look at the acceptance tolerance
for each barrel maker.

You will find that some have a max tolerance of .0001. others .0003 and the rest have
different grades ranging from .0005 to .0007 max.

One of the reasons I use a lot of Lilja barrels is that he only makes one quality barrel
and it must be less than .0001 end to end and bore diameter.

Lots of barrel makers produce barrels and then grade them based on how good they are
and call the best select, and then match, then standard grade and are usually less than
.0003 select, .0005 match and less than .0007 for a standard grade.

But keep in mind that Factory barrels allow much more deviation in tolerance than the
"Good" custom barrel makers.

You get what you pay for when it comes to barrels !
