New Scope, Any suggestions?

Just found this forum while searching for info on scopes. So yes I,m new. I,m sure there are posts on the subject, but appreciate any views. I'm looking to buy a new scope for groundhog hunting. Shooting a 308 win. model 12 savage. Want to shoot out to 1000 yrds. $500 to $900 price range.

A 10x is all that is needed for 1000 target. I would look at the vortex pst's in that
price range. Something in a 14x max power would suit me for groundhogs as they
are a bit bigger than our average Prairie dog.

You don't have to get the custom turret, but I strongly suggest that you do. Range your target then turn turret to yardage and shoot. It is that easy.

Thanks for the quick response. I'm very interested in the Viper PST 6-24x50 FFP. Was just on there site. Anyone else with any experience with Vortex?

Snipercentral.com has a whole section devoted to scope reviews over last number of years, it is a good starting point. It has reticle picts,weight,etc. Once you narrow it down, someone here Im sure could answer guestions

For New to Intermediate Shooters, you can't go wrong with the Nitrex Two 3-15's that Natchez is selling.

I believe the model I have linked below also gets a 100.00 rebate until the end of December. 3-15X50

Same As the Weavers(same Company) that sell for much more.

Once they are gone, I would assume they will not be produced as the mothership wishes to go with Weaver name brand. So with rebate, you get the Weaver comparable scope for 200.00 bucks. That deal is smoking, and jsut so you know, I put my money where my mouth is and bought two.....Optics are good but not quite equal to my Zeiss Conquest. Turrets are acceptable. Not as good as the PST's supposedly but then they are not available. (apparantly starting to ship so they should start to trickle in) I also have Vortex scopes and like them as well. This is a short term opportunity, once the Nitrex 2's are gone r if you just can't pull the trigger on them I would vote Vortex Viper and if you can wait, the PST is looking sweet.

Do not overlook Nikon and Sightron scopes. They are both truly excellent glass that will save you a lot of cash over $900 scopes.

Nikon 6-18x40 $309.99

Just because you have the cash to blow, does not mean you should not be frugal and save some $$$ for ammo or reloading gear.

$900 would get some excellent glass and plenty of reloading supplies and gear. lightbulb

Point well taken Not in a hurry to blow $900. Shopping and weighing options right now. Want the best for the best price, but don't want to save a hundred or two now, spend 600 and in a year regret not spending another 1or 2. If I'm satisfied, as I'm sure you can relate to, I will soon forget about the money spent. But if I'm not, less spent will burn twice as much.

This is why I bit the bullet and bought the 6-24x50mm PST. I can not afford $1800 or more for a scope. Mine will do anything that I want it to do for half the price of the high end scopes like a Night Force except the glass won't be as clear. My buddy has 2 NF and even though mine isn't as clear it is still plenty clear enough for me to hold at 400 yards with very strong heat waves to shoot a 1+3/4" 3 shot group. I have also hit gongs all the way out to 1100 or 1200 yds.

Joseph,

Been doing more scope shopping, and read some more of your replies on other threads. Just wondering if there is anything that you dislike about your Vortex, no matter how small? As I look at more scopes and hear more opinions, I keep coming back to this scope. It's a little more than I want to spend, but like I said, I want no regrets. Probably will be ready to buy in mid January. I don't think I've read anything negative anywhere yet with this scope.
