Another accubond question

How many of you have shot medium size game animals(deer) with an accubond under the suggested 1800fps, and with what results? I'm gonna try to take out one of santa's reighndeer @ 1000 yards off the neighbors roof....
 
In the past 4 seasons, I have taken or witnessed the taking of 29 deer with the 160 gr accubond ranges were from just over 300 yards to 1,350 yards, impact velocities were from just over 3000 fps to just under 1550 fps, all the exit wounds looked the same.

First of all, so that I don't start a bullet war, "I like AB's". Having said that, I started making my own bullets because the 200 grain AB's fired from my 30" barreled 300 ultra at 3350' were little better than solids at 1000 yards on elk. An elk is not a deer, as your question was submitted, but that should cause MORE expansion if anything. I've done quite a bit of testing in various types of media as well and have found that 1800' is too slow for AB expansion unless you hit some heavy bone....Rich
 
Are Berger VLD's any better. My 300WM is only pushing my 210 1636fps at 1000 yards. I called Berger and they told me there was no min fps.

I emailed Bryan Litz about the effective minimum velocity for the 210grs VLD cal 308 and he answered 1,800 fps.

Berger VLDs will not open below 1800' and it is very doubtful they will open AT 1800 unless something with quite a bit of resistance is hit. This is based on my personal testing. Someone else may argue the point?.....Rich
 
So really there is not a hunting bullet that is mass produced that will perform at real world velocities at 1000 yards out of a 300WM?

I would add "not perform consistently" in my opinion. That is why I make a thin skinned, high b.c. bullet with a ballistic tip. If I were going to TRY a mass produced bullet for your rifle at that range, it would probably be the A-Max. I haven't personally used it on game, but the ballistic tip would likely be more consistent for expansion........Rich
p.s. Not trying to knock Bergers, I use them in my 6.5 and I think they are a great bullet! Just not at below 1800'.

No I am glad you are here because this is the part I'm still learning. Hornady says that the amax is not good for hunting. What you are saying is that the amax becomes a good hunting bullet at thoes velocities. So the thin jacket that keeps it from being a good hunting bullet at high velocity is what makes it become a good hunting bullet at low velocities....it's thin jacket. Is this correct and where do you believe this change occurs?

That is EXACTLY what I think and you can't blame Hornady because how many people would shoot at 1000 yards? I don't know for sure at what range the window is but I am quite sure that from testing I have done with my own bullets that it would for sure come unglued at velocities above 2500'. My guess is that the difference between the Berger and the A-Max is , the Berger will penetrate further at higher velocity before it blows and the A-Max will expand when the Berger would not expand at all. Again, different windows of effectiveness. I would encourage you to test. The more the better......Rich
 
Ok, I shot a 200# buck at 536 yards with a 210vld. I hit rib on the way in but there was only a quarter size exit wound. The external damage was not that bad, it wasn't like it came apart...so I'm a little confused.

What was your impact velocity, maybe 2400? Again, ballistic tips are a LOT more predictable than a very small meplat hollow point.

Ridge Runner: can't argue with it working for you! I just didn't have that kind of result with my 300 RUM or I never would have started making bullets:D
