custom barrel for .300 ultra

What would by your # 1 choice for a custom barrel for a sendero .300 ultra mag shooting 210 bergers. My factory barrel just isn't what it should be IMO. I have tried the 168 bergers with two different powders and am lucky told hold moa consistently. I am going to give the 210s a try and if they don't perform, its time for a new tube.

Only two? I spent days at the range and went through probably 40 powder/load combinations before I hit on the one I liked....

LOL, I guess I have never had this much difficulty in finding a combination. The rifle has been bedded, trigger work, good optics. I would have broke something if I had to go through that many combos before finding one that worked in a rifle not to mention by then it would be darn close for a new tube anyway.

I feel for you as I too went through the same problems, I jumped on the berger bandwagon but I knew I was only interested in either 185's, 190's or 210 bergers. At 100 yards they shot great, I put alot of rounds through my gun, but once I moved out to 200 yards my groups went to hell. So then I tried other bullets, other powders, other primers, different seating depths and nothing was working and I was racking up my rounds down the barrel. Ok now lets go back about 6 months when I bought the gun brand new and took it straight to a gunsmith and had it worked over and a muzzle break put on. One of the things I kept blaming for my lousy groups was the trigger, so I bought a jewell, didn't help. Then another gunsmith told me to try barnes 180gr TTSX and for me to call his friend. Well because of the amount of rounds down the barrel it was felt the barrel was shot out. I took my gun to another smith and he took a look at the muzzle break and said it was built all wrong, there were some other things that I had done to the gun that were not right. We talked and agreed that the muzzle break was the biggest cause from the lousy acuracy from the gun. So he took the break off, yes now my gun does not have a muzzle break but I don't feel the recoil is nothing I can't handle. He also gave me a load to try and is suppose to be pretty deadly in the sendero 300RUM. To make a long story short I did take the gun out the other morning even thou it was colder then heck, I had to re-sight in my gun and then moved out to 200 yards and was pleasently suprised at the good groups, finally my gun was shooting the way it should. But I won't be able to do anymore shooting until I heal from my back surgery in January, so come April then I can start shooting to make sure. If I still can't get it to shoot any better then I will rebarrel it and have it rechambered to a 7MM STW. Good luck on your qwest for an acurate load.

My factory 300 rum liked RL25 best with the 210 bergers and federal GM primers and H4831 with the 168 grainers with rem 9 1/2 primers,both of these shot 1/2 moa,i suggest you try different seating depths before you toss your barrel.Good Luck.

My 300RUM with a 27" kreiger would not shoot the bergers to my satisfaction (just barely under MOA) with h1000, rl25, or retumbo. I switched to the 220g SMK 88g (I dont have my log book on me so I dont know coal but its just too the lands.) In one session using these bullets I was .3" and as far as im concerned done with my load developement for now.

I built a 300 RUM with a 27" lilja. I tried the Berger VLDs and moved on. This rifle shoots the following with approx 1/4 MOA out to a tested 550 yds. 168 sierra matchking, 180 and 200 gr accubond, and 168 TSX. Some rifles just don't like the VLD.

I would go with a broughton. I have shot them for a long time and have NO complaints. I currently have a .300 RUM with a Broughton 32" 5C 1.45" straight blank barrel that is a 10 twist. It is very heavy, but it helps tame the recoil of the rifle. I get very good results with the Berger 210s and the 155s. I shoot the 210s with 97.5 gr of H-1000 @ 3450 fps and the 155s with 107 gr H-1000 @ 3950. Both of these loads are VERY accurate out to at least 1000 yards. I cant test longer yardages so I dont know. around .3 MOA from 100 to 1000 yards.

Anyway, to get back to your question I would get the broughton with the factory Remington taper, if you like that taper with a 10 twist to stabalize the heavy bullets and just pick the length you want and go from there. I don't think you'll be dissatisfied.

Because I don't have one yet, my FIRST choice for a 300 RUM barrel would be from Rock. But I would happily use any of these:

Krieger, Bartlien, Broughton, Hart, Shilen, Lilja, Brux, or Obermeyer.

I wouldn't get any preconcieved notions about which bullet to run, but I would stick with something over 180gr. Using a .300 to push 168gr bullets is like using a Peterbuilt to tow a jet ski. If your rifle doesn't like the bergers than try the 200gr sierra matchkings. Their tangent ogive make them a lot less finicky than the secant ogive found on vlds and amaxs. And for barrel choice, I am in the process of order a 5r 9.5twist kreiger. Just my personal preference.

I agree about bullet sizes, I don't feel that your using the gun to its fullest extent, I don't shoot anything lighter then 180gr bullets. I know the spyder bull was killed with a 168gr barnes bullet. I reallly like the broughton barrels. Those carbon fiber barrels sure are nice, but not having a job is a little hard to swallow. But when I make up my mind after some more testing, If I decide to rebarrel then its going to be a 30" broughton and rechambered to 7MM STW, That gun will be extrememly acurate and recoild will not be quite as wild.
