Has anyone done any short range (inside 300 yds), higher velocity (2700-2900 fps), expansion tests on any of the .338 cal, 300 gr bullets? All I have seen anywhere are the longer distances. I was just wondering how they would work out if the instance arose where you needed to pull the trigger at a closer distance?

I too am interested. I would like to see the results from even closer say inside 50 yards. Just in case Im in bear country and hiking then stumble into Yogi bear on a trail. Just in case type of thing.

Eric Wallace (Ewallace) has been 10yards from a Elk I believe when shot! I think it was a 350gr smk though..?

I shot a Deer at 220 Yards with the 300 SMK out of my 338 Lapua, about 2800 FPS at the muzzle. And a Bull Elk at 150 yards. The bullet coomes unglued at the close distance (inside of 300 yrads. The amount of internal damage is VERY impresive.

Here is some of what I found in a elk shot at 10 yards with a .338 300g SMK at 3050fps shot was in the hind quarter right side and the jacket and some led fragments were found in the left front shoulder. The elk went down instantly

Sounds like they work well at both short and long distances. I was just afraid they would pencil through at shorter distances.

Why would you think that a bullet would be less likely to expand up close where the velocity is higher?

Pointed bullets that do not expand are notoriously famous for turning of course and or tumbling. The " so called "pencil through" theory doesn't hold water

I shot a coyote at 187 yards with a 300gr hybrid launched at 2930fps. The coyote was slightly quartering towards, and was hit through the onside shoulder, leaving a roughly 6" hole out the farside right by what was the end of the ribs. Good thing I wasn't looking for a pelt...

Coyote shot witha 300 grain SMK from my 338 Lapua at 169 facing me bullet entered mouth at the lower jar and blew out the back of the head

I shot a Red Deer spiker at 49 yards with my Edge, 1-9twist, 300 SMK at 2830fps.
It was the first deer I shot with it, so much for my LR rig :D
The deer was facing me quartering, it hit high on the shoulder & took out 6-8 inchs of back bone, needless to say he went right down :)
The retrieved bullet weighed 125 grains & was intact for approx 1/4" from the base.
I was very impressed that it didn't completely blow up, if I had had my 338 Improved it may have been a different story but the end result would have been the same :)
You gotta love electronic earmuffs, no time for ear protection in this case, just as well I had them on lightbulb

Similar results w/ 300gr SMK's as the rest who've posted. High shoulder shot on a small whitetail buck at 127 yards w/ my Lapua - entrance hole was the size of a nickel, exit hole was the size of a softball.

a generic 30-06 will do anything you ask for, and not beat you up. You also might look for a .270 or a .280 as well.
