Scope advice

I have purchased a new savage model 12 BVSS, 22-250. Most of my shots will be less than 300 yds but would like the capability to shoot 500. I am looking at the bushnell elite 4200 line. Just need some advice on magnifacation, at the high end is x16 enough or should I go up to the x24? Leaning toward the 40mm or would the extra money for the 50mm be worth it. Also any advice on base and rings for this set up. I am a skeet shooter and grew up shooting and still shoot rimfire. This is all new to me so any advice is welcome.

driller, I have the same rifle set up with a Weaver Grand Slam 6-20 varmint dot. Repeatable , good glass for < $400.
As far as rings and bases EGW bases ($40) and weaver grand slam rings or Burris signature zee rings work well without breaking the bank.

I would check the drop on the 22/250 at 500 yds and see if that scope has enough adjustment. If it does not you might think about a 20 Moa base. I had to put one on my 6.5 x 47 L to reach 1000 yds.

The -16X has about 50" internal adj, it's pretty close but it should be suffice for the 500 yards shot. The -24X internal adj will be ~half that of the -16X.

Magnification wise, it depends on your eye sight. There are folks here that are very capable of taking shots beyond 1000 yards at 15X or less. Unfortunately, I am not one of them, I need as much usable magnification I can get/afford.

40 or 50? Again, it's a matter of preference. IMHO, 40 is plenty but I'd get the 50 for that extra advantage ... I need everything that can augment my eye sight. The 50 will require a higher cheek weld.

As far as base and rings, I'd go with mkg recommendation (esp. the Burris with inserts) but go with Russ Hatch's 20 MOA recommendation.

After reading some reviews on this site I went ahead and ordered a Vortex Viper 6.5-20x44. Even if I have enough adjustment in the scope should I still use a 20 moa base? This is all new to me. Thanks

I would, the 20 MOA base will allow you to keep the internal adjustments closer to centered which is an advantage when making windage adjustments.

I think you will like the scope. I especially like the ability to zero the dials after I'm sighted in. This especially helplful if you click up for different yardages. Now go shoot out to 500 yds and check your bullet drops at various distances.

Not to be contrary, but a 20 moa base really isn't necessary if you only intend on shooting to 500 or 600 yds.............but it probably wont hurt, and will give you the extra room later if you want to extend your shooting past that distance.

I shoot my 22-250 out to 600 without ever dialing the knobs. I don't have any built in elevation in the base or rings.

I sight in 1" high at 200 yds. I then use the moa holdover reticle. It's 1 moa low at 300, 3 moa low at 400, 5 1/2 moa low at 500 and 8 1/2 moa at 600. I hold off for wind and have 10 mph winds memorized. It's then easy to use 1/2 that number for 5 mph........many many coyotes have fell to this combination over the years.

Have to agree and with a 20 moa base you probably will have trouble getting on target at shorter range. Just as an example, a scope with 50 moa internal elevation combined with a 308 is the combination a buddy of mine uses for F Class 1000 yard matches. Your -250 is much flatter than the 308 all the way to 500 yards easily.
