I guided good friend and LRH member JMason on his 1st long range deer hunt. With snow and cold weather we saw plenty of deer. On Thursday around lunch time I spotted a nice high 8 point walking up out of the bottom. He was in no hurry, just picking and feeding his way out of a bowl. He had about 20 yards to go until he would be in some more open timber when he stopped and decided to bed down. He left us very little of a shot. We waited him out until almost 3pm. We were running out of light and time so we moved around until we had the best opening we could find to get a shot in. At 460 yards JMason got into position with my 338-408 Chey-Tac. JMason said he was ready and I watched as he released the shot. The bullet clipped a small twig about the diameter of a pencil just before the bullet reached its mark. The bullet ricocheted off course about 6 inches right after hitting the twig. The deer burst out of its nest and went only 25 yards left and stopped in good open timber. JMason loaded another round and at 474 yards the deer didn't have a chance. JMason touched the second round off and the bullet slammed into the deers shoulder. The deer tried to run but both front legs were broke. The deer ended up doing a head stand when he tried to run. The deer started sliding and flipping and rolled over 100 yards down the mountain until it got hung up on a log. JMason killed a great buck and was very excited. I'm sure this will be an annual event with many more hunts to come. The video of this hunt will later be seen on our 2nd dvd to come Extended Impact II.

Hope you all enjoy.

Jon and Kevin,

Way to go! I don't suppose Wampum was very excited. Can't believe he held it together for that second shot.:D Way to go Jon-Cool!!

Amazing spotting noticing the twig deflection was outstanding observation. Takes the questions quickly out of the process. Great work and shows the vital part the spotter!

Oh, if you wouldn't have been using a pecker wood 338 Chey and had a 375 Chey the first shot would have been sufficient.:D:D:D

Thanks Guys. Just noticed this post. I cannot express in words what a great time I had, and the extent I appreciate Kevin taking time out to spend hunting with me. Thanks for the hunt, and posting this Kevin I really appreciate it.

Roy- Kevin's experience and expertise really stands out when you have the opportunity to hunt with him. He spots those deer you and me would/do look right over. You don't really understand how much of a novice you (me) are until you're sittin next to a guy like him.

Nice...hunting with the mad scientist is awesome I'm sure.

As I read it, I was thinking of a conversation I had with my nephew when we discussed all we had to do was shoot 350+ to eclipse your long shot on deer. Now I gotta get one to stand at 475+!!!!!!

Where was your 7?

I hear ya on that!

I spent a month on the hill with in '07 with buffalobob. Pretty much the same experience. The only time I spotted animals before him was the day he was off somewhere else. All in all it was a humbling learning experience.

nice job jmason.
since you were hunting with kevin i would assume you were in my neiborhood. you are indeed fortunate to have an experienced person such as he as your mentor.
the group he's associated with have been very succesful here for decades.
just curious, but has he hinted as to your need for a chainsaw.

Trebark was also tellin me about watching to shoot one at 351+ to eclipse you jmason, I specifically remember "I don't care if it's a 35lb fawn, if it's 351s or more I'm shooting it!" well 475 is a respectable kill, and a nice buck to boot! Trebark and I may just have to break that next weekend, sorry :D

and what's your rifle doing till next year?? Last I checked VA deer season is still open :p

Trebark and I may just have to break that next weekend, sorry :D

I hope both you guys get big boys (or girls) at triple that distance!

Last I checked VA deer season is still open

If that's an invite I may take you up on it next season. I'm out of days to take off from work this year.

Congrats Mason!

And sorry for not calling to ask for your permission to shoot saturday...it won't happen again:D I just got excited...and when Kevin says go ahead and shoot I want to watch I don't give him time to change his mind...:D
