New guy to long range, Need some help?

I think i have settled on purchasing the Vortex Viper 6.5-20X44mm. I know i said i was having my hard time getting my hands on them until i found out all this time there was a dealer only 25 mins up the way from me. Now being extremely new to long range hunting and shooting, would this scope be any good for up to 600 yards? It will be put on a Remington 700 243. win for coyotes and targets. Now i will most likely get it with the BDC reticle, but would this scope work for dialing as well. Most scopes need the target turrets, but this one says Tall Turrets, with caps. Does it work pretty much the same way. Just dial in the correct moa, and hold dead on? i dont need target turrets right. Will it hold zero?


NOW i know how stupid these might sound, but im really new to all this. Want a lot of practice and would like to get into long range hunting and shooting. i dont have a lot of money to spend on a real good scope, so i dont want to mess up or regret, or be disappointed in this buy, or expect more then what the scope is.

I am new to long range hunting too, the best advice I can give you is to save your brass and buy quality first time around.

I saved up before I purchased my .243 rifle and scope and I am glad I did. There is an old saying that I hear a lot with shooting.

"Buy good once, buy rubbish once, then buy twice and pay more."

Save your brass and get a top quality scope first time around.

I saved up and got a Nightforce NXS 5.5-22 X 56 and I am so glad I did.

I also saved up to purchase all Redding reloading gear with comp dies and steered clear of the cheaper Lee gear.

The results have been excellent so far.

In the 8 months I have been shooting rifles I have reloaded my own ammo and am getting

1. Sub 1" groups at 200yds with a factory rifle.
2. 10+ 400yd rabbits
3. 1 x 700yd hare.

I may have achieved the same with cheaper gear, but I doubt it.

Don't rush to buy gear, save and get the best.

I had the Vortex Viper 6.5-20X44mm on a 7mm and shot it out to 750yds and dialed turrets. The scope tracked very well but I had the V-plex model.

Matt I don't think you can go wrong with the Viper scope. I've got one on my 25/300WSM and have a friend that has one on his 300RUM and we are both very happy with them. They will track correctly every time. And yes the tall turrets are the same thing as target turrets, they just have caps over them; which is a good thing IMO. I've had my Viper side by side with leupold vx3's and mark 4's, swarovski's, nikon monarchs and buckmasters, bushnell elites, burris fullfields, sightrons, and schmidt and benders and the only ones that seem as clear are the mark 4's and the monarchs with the S&B being the only one that looks better. This informal test was done by myself and 3 friends that are rabid leupold freaks. To say they were impressed with my $400 scope as opposed to their $1100 mark 4's would be the understatement of the year! And just as another selling point for Vortex they have an unconditional unlimited, over the counter no questions asked warranty. Buy the Viper and never look back! I did and will be buying more in the future!
