Remington 700 5r safety problem?

Hello,

I'm buying a Rem. 700 5r new. I've heard about safety problems and watched the CNBC show about rifles firing without having the trigger pulled. Is this something I should consider before I purchasing this rifle, or has the problem been fixed in newer Remington firearms?

What you say may be true, but can you provide evidence to prove it? Are you involved with any firearms marketing or manufacturing that might make you a little biased? I'm not trying to egg you on, I really want this gun. I'm just trying to gain a little clarity on the issue that I cannot gain from the mixed reviews I find using google. I thought that this would be the place to obtain expert opinions.

the rem 700 is a mechanical device. it can fail, just like any other mechanical device. it can also be adjusted improperly or have cleaning fluids run all through them causing them to gunk up and malfunction. this is the cause of the malfunctions. the injuries and deaths were caused by misshandling of the firearm. cars malfunction every day and kill people. usually it's a combination of missuse or misshandling that causes the death.

There is an issue and there is quite a bit of information to justify your concern. The new triggers are not a problem.

Send me your email and I can forward you some Remington documents sent to me that were actual exibits in litigation and you can judge for yourself rather that getting opinions form a chat board.

Thanks guys. Appreciate the info. It seems that most of these accidents could have been avoided if the people involved had not pointed their muzzle in an unsafe direction, which is something I'm always concious of. Still, it does seem like there may be a safety issue with the old triggers. I'm not too worried about it though since the 5r I'm buying is new and should have the x-mark trigger.

don't bet the farm on that statement! If you do your gonna loose it. I have a 700 that's fired when the saftey is let off several times (on it's third trigger now, and so far this one hasn't in about 200 rounds). There's also about a dozen people that could testify to this as well if we could bring them back from the grave. I think the problem is not just the trigger alone, but a combination of the saftey design and the trigger group itself. Mike Walker discovered this problem many many years ago and suggested a redesign at Remington, and they never followed thru (Mr. Walker designed the 722, 40x, 700, and maybe the 600 series).

Mike Walker found the problem at the factory, and if anybody knows the design he does as it was his design
