I know that the 375rum is not considered a elr rifle. However I think that with a 30in barrel it could possibly be a good way to get into a less expensive 375. What do you think? And what velocity should i expect shooting the 350smk's? All opinions are welcome.

it has been the lack of bullet selection that has been teh reason for its unsuitability for LR hunting in the past. However with the 350SMK available now, its a very powerful and excellent long range hunting caliber. Some people have already been using it, and also the improved version. The improved case is running over 2850-2900fps from memory....

That is what I was thinking. I found the 350smk's. What would It take to covert the rum to a rum improved? and what is the b.c of the smk or even the 355 grn cheytech bullet?

It is a great Elk rifle !!

The bullet of choice is a 270 gr because of velocity and range. The 375 RUM will move it over
3100 ft/sec with a long barrel (30 ") and this is a serious neighborhood.

It will take anything you want to shoot and believe it or not it wont ruin a lot of meat like
some think because the bullets are strong and don't fragment, leaving a nice exit wound.

With a good break and a mag or heaver tapered barrel recoil is very manageable.

What 270 grn bullet would be best for long range shooting. I know that barnes makes a 270 grn and nosler makes a 260 accubond. Don't know which one.

the BC of the 350gr SMK is .780. Some are using .800 but i think thats a bit optimistic...

RUM improved is simply a new chamber cut with the improved geometry reamer...

For ELR, those 260gr lighter bullets dont have the BC to run with the 350SMK, but for shorter ranges they will shoot flatter. Depends on what your shooting i suppose...

I also looked at gs custom 291 grn bullets. They have a bc of .700. with a 30 in barrel I could get 2900 out of it with the improved version? Would I need special reloading dies for the tejas? And is it easy to reload for?

As JE Custom says 350smk is excellent for elk . I used 350smk at 636 yds last year for an elk. two rounds about 4 inches apart punhed 5" exit holes in the chest.

reloading any improved case is only different in that virgin cases need to be blown out on the first fire forming. Once this is done, its all the same thereafter. Yes you will need dies, same as reloading any cartridge - a die that matches your chamber. In the case of an improved RUM, it would be a custom die from CH4D or similar as none of the typical die makers would stock such a rare item.

Whilst they are quite rare at the moment, i think we are gonna see alot more 375`s in the future, they are really starting to catch on....

My 375 tejas has been easy to load for after blowing out the cases, I use a 378 weatherby neck die that I ground off about .060 from the bottom. I have an rcbs comp bullet seater but a standard 375 rum seat die will work. I use the 260 accubond as my short range bullet (800 yds). I have the 350 smk for long shots but for me terminal performance has been disappointing. I am hopeing for a wildcat bullet soon.

As I sit here looking at the 350 SMK I keep thinking that nothing but a solid shoulder bone shot would be the ticket.

As for the bc, it's very close to that of the 338 300 SMK but maybe enough different to notice a bit of an increase at higher elevations.

If I had a 375 RUM first I wouldn't have the 338 RUM.

I'm looking forward to giving this 375 AM a good go.

what velocity are you getting with the 350 smk's. Hey 338 bruce have you tried the gs custom 291 grn bullets? they have a bc of .731 or so.

Roy i would love to see the results of your 375 allen mag. So if I don;t have a 338 rum am i looking at the right place with the 375rum?
