How far can you shoot?

I am trying to decide on a scope for my 338 Lapua. (shooting 300 smk's at 2750 I am leaning towards a vx3 with a tapered base. However the Leupold has only 90 MOA of adjustment so with a 20 moa base i will only have 1600-1700 capability. which is outrageously far so maybe only isnt the correct term. Anyway is that about on par with the upper end of most everyone elses capability and or ability? I was hoping for 2k capability but only for playing around. opinions please!

Man, 2k is far. I doubt more than maybe 5% of the members here are capable of that. My skill level right now, puts my comfort range for taking game with a single coldbore shot at 700yards in any reasonable weather conditions. That is with my 300rum spitting out 210vlds at 3170. I hope to be ready for 1k by next season. Now banging steel is a different matter

If the coin is available the Vortex Razor runs 125 MOA, I'm thinking that would be my first choice. Second would be a Nightforce 5.5-22 for 100MOA with a 30 MOA base. An optic that you could use some hold over in MOA would be and asset also.

Dang right you have to shoot that thing till the bullets won't stay in the air, it would be wrong not to :D

Vortex Razor huh? I have been slightly interested in the vortex but I dont know much about them. are the clicks repeatable? how do they ladder test? As far as range goes I may not have the ability. I am pretty comfortable at 800 which is my max capability right now. I have an 8" gong I practice on and have shot a few critters at 700 plus. that was with my 25-06 though so with my 338 I think i can do a bit better. bigngreen im going to check out vortex right now

I have posted one of these videos before but here is both of them

I am using a NF 8-32 X -56 mm NF with an NP-R2 on a 7AM with a 200 Gr HP RBBT. I have the night force topped out at 50 MOA and an using the reticle to get the additional MOA I need, which IIRC is about 8 or so.

When you watch the first video notice that the smaller buck is obviously another 100 yards further than the one standing with his butt to me but I simply do not notice that important factor when I decide to give him a try. You can also notice that I manage to judge the wind correctly at 2K. Shooting beyond 1K without a spotter is only better than shooting with an idiot for a spotter. A good spotter is really important to your success but not many people actually know half as much as they post about killing animals at 1K and beyond and few of them are retired and can spend the time I do.

My judgment is that the Luepold V3 is a very capable scope out to about 1300 yards or so and would be better if they gave you a MOA reticle like NF does. You will also notice that I shoot second focal plane scopes and simply will not waste the energy talking to people who post about the benefits of first focal plane scopes. My time is better spent killing animals than arguing with armchair hunters who don't ever kill anything.

You are welcome to look at some of my other videos although most have been posted here.

What I want ot know is what you are useing for a range finder to get a range good enought to use past 700 or 800 yrds?????????? Allso at those ranges wind is a real killer.

I shoot 2000 yards on a regular basis. I am using the 5.5x22 NSX with a 40 MOA rail. From a 300 yard zero with my EDGE shooting the 300 SMK at 2875 I have to come up around 66 MOA depending on conditions. That is the scope I would recommend with the NPR1 reticle so you can use the reticle to make quick adjustments for changes in wind.

BMcKell That is exactly what I was expecting people to reccomend down to the reticle. that is tied with the leupold for my first choice. im just not sure i can talk the wife into letting me spend another 6-800 bucks...

Shootin steel at 2000 yds. is one thing.....shootin game at that distance is....well....just plain ole CHIT HOUSE LUCK!!

And yes....I'M RETIRED.....and it would probably take about 4 18 wheelers to haul off all the ammo I've fired at LR these past 60 years with a very wide range of calibers!!:rolleyes:

Not steel. I shoot at rocks up through canyons to practice in conditions similar to hunting. Shooting at steel on flat ground is not the same. Making hits at 2000 really isn't luck anymore. My best was hitting a mannequin head from 2000 that was sitting on top of a cliff. It took me 5 tries but the other 4 were right there.

that is awesome

nsx 5-22 moa reticle with np-r1 will do the job.
what i see a major problem will be to stay supersonic at 2k.
i shot my 338edge pushing 300smk at 2830fps up to 1954yards, and after that i'm subsonic and the prediction are out of chart.
at 1786yrds 9-10in target is easy, if you read the wind over open spaces.
1950 and up a really chalenge if you are subsonic.

the nightforce NXS with NPR 1 reticle is hard to beat, shooting game at 2000 + yards isnt something most people should try, but rock shooting at these ranges is great fun but can bring you down to earth in a big way some days, winds coming from different directions down range can be mighty hard to get right.
