I have been shooting a .338 Edge now for some time and love the performance that it offers for long range shooting.
This rifle is however quite heavy and although I have back packed it into some remote hunting areas it is realy not suited to being an all round rifle.
Where it fails is when I bump into a big sambar stag and have to try and shoot it off hand. Simply impractical to shoot a 15lb rifle with 30" barrel off hand with a 22 power scope.

What I need is a standard weight rifle with 90% the performance of the Edge. So I have collected a few bits and peices and will be getting Geoff Grenfell from Bendigo to put it all together.

The rifle will be chambered in .338 RUM and sport a 26.5" #4 Pac-Nor stainless match barrel. Out front is a D.E. 3 port brake.

Donor action is a Chromolly Remington 700 action from a fairly new 7mm Rem Mag that had a defective factory chamber. Stock is simply a Boyds laminate.

Scope is a light weight Bushnell 2.5-16X sitting on a EGW rail and Burris tactical rings. This should to be one of the cheapest builds going, but should also be the right tool for the job.

That being, a standard weight rifle capable of applying plenty of thump way out yonder while at the same time, be handy enough to drop a running stag at 50 yards in thick scrub.

I will post a few photo's in a few weeks when it is done.

.338 Norma Magnum, fits in standard long action recievers
How do they go with a standard Remington magnum bolt face?

Don't they have to open up the face and then fit an alternate extractor of some sort? ie like a .338 Lapua does?

Would a .338 Norma Mag, feed OK from a standard Remington magazine or would it require an aftermarket box magazine?

Sorry,I must clearify that it is a magnum long action not a factory ultra mag action or lapua action.

Stu,
Thanks for the review. Interesting what he said that the .338 Norma being suited to a Rem long action but he never built his on that action.

Not sure how available .338 Norna brass is down here but .338 RUM brass is actually cheaper than .300 RUM brass and is easy to obtain.

The .338 Norma is a bit exotic for me at this stage. I am going to stick with the .338 RUM. I think it will do everything that I want it to in a light rifle. I will find out in a couple of weeks.:D

That sound's like a great setup. What weight to you think it will work out at? Look forward to hearing how it works out and seeing how it shoots.

Well the beast is ready and I pick her up tomorrow.

Very excited to see how it looks and shoots. Will make a fine light weight partner for for my heavy weight .338 Edge rifle.

The gunsmith said it has some stiff recoil, but that was just test firing for function without the weight of a scope and rings etc.

I will try and get some photo's up on the weekend.

Keep us updated. I am interested to hear how it shoots and what it weighs in at and what recoil pad you end up with. With the muzzle break I would have thought it wouldn't kick any harder than a 338WM

No time for pics today. Shot F-Class all day today and shooting 2x1000 yard events at Rosedale tomorrow.
Hope to get some pictures up tomorrow night after I get back.

Jawz,
Make fine pack rifle for down in the Moroka next April-May!!!!!!What are you doing then???
