Budget Long Range Scope

I am building a budget long range rifle and looking for a decent piece of glass at a reasonable price. What are your thoughts on the Nitrex, made by Weaver? Would you buy the 3-15x 42 ($239) or the 4-20x50 ($289)? Seems like a heck of a deal.

Don't know anything about Nitrex, but a friend just bought a Bushnell Elite 4200 6-24X off of Ebay for $280. For a fixed power Super Sniper is a awesome scope for the money. I am not sure your price range but leupold offers a 4.5-14 CDS for $550 with two custom turrets. I have only shot these scopes on friends rifles, I usually save for a long time and buy NF 8-32X56's. I invested in the scopes planning on keeping them for a long time.

Torchrider, I've owned both Nitrex TR2s you are considering for one or two months. Mine have the trexplex reticle....saved a $30-40 on each with it.

I'm very happy with my Nitrex...the clarity/brightness of the Japanese glass is quite good. To quote a very scope savvy buddy at range who spent a couple of minutes with my TR2 3-15X42 SF at shooting bench viewing downrange, "Da--, this has good glass." Four other scope savvy gents I shoot with on a regular basis will each take a turn with the Nitrex and all will be impressed with it. General consensus of my Leupold, Sightron, Burris, Zeiss user buddies, "if it holds up, has no internal problems, then its a heck of a scope for a heck of a price." All like its other features too, SF, pullup turrets for example....thought elevation/windage had nice positive clicks. Nothing about scope suggests anything cheap about it. Only negative thing I have to say about my Nitrex....on the heavy side as far as weight. Scope built and tested to withstand 375 H&H recoil. By the way, ATK owns both Nitrex and Weaver....tr1 is Weaver Grand Slam and tr2 is a Weaver Super Slam.

Thanks for the info! How much elevation and windage adjustment do the scopes have? Enough for 1000 yards?

Based on Weaver Super Slams specs (which should be same for Nitrex).....4-20X50 has adjustment range of 270 clicks of 1/8" adjustment....3-15x42 has 200 clicks of 1/4" adjustment. Presently I'm limited to 200 yard shooting at range I'm a member....bought the 4-20X50 for 600 yard range nearing completion. So, sorry, don't know first hand about 1000 yard shooting, nor do I recall any comment on any gunsite forum about how Nitrex adjustment will handle this distance.

The Nitrex line is basically a rebranded Weaver of upper quality. I think they are in the line of Grand Slam to Super Slam quality which is very good. Weaver IMO makes a very good product. Great Glass, excellent durability and turret design. They are a very heavy scope so make sure that isn't a factor for you. I have a couple classic extremes and a few V16's and have had no issues. I think the Nitrex line has a $100 rebate right now which along with their sale prices makes for a good buy.

$50 Nitrex rebate on their discontinued TR1 scopes and $100 on discontinued TR2 scopes........seems to be a $50 Rebate available now on same scopes in Weaver Grand Slam and Super Slam lines.

I have two Nitrex TR2's3-15X42 being shipped and due to arrive soon. At the price I couldn't find anything close to the specs and quality they claim where I am so what the heck. No $100 rebate here but still a good price.
With the EBX reticle and drop charts the adjustment range should not be a problem. I am seeking reliable ranging out to 600yd with both 270win and 338 Win Mag. I have a Nikon Monarch 3-12X42 on the 338 at present so it will be interesting to see how they compare..

The Nitrex scopes arrived today and they are very nice. One thing that is odd (but is good) is that the actual weight of the 3-15X42 is 21 oz. The specs say 27oz which I was a bit worried about especially on the 270. All in all they really look the goods. Especially if you can get them for around $200 with the rebate..

Have you checked out how accurate the turret adjustments are yet?

Haven't put it in the rings yet but I have heard that they track pretty well. Will find out Saturday. The pop up turrets are a great feature and the clicks are well defined and easy to feel.
