I'm looking for a good load for elk out of 26" inch barrel. I just can't seem to get a good load worked up.

I use between 70-72 grs of Re 22 with the 200 gr Accubond, good for 2950 and .75 moa out of a 26" Savage barrel.

I get good accuracy (.370") from the 180gn Ballistic Tip ahead of 69.0gns of H4350 and a 9.5M primer. Velocity from my 26" barrel is 3094fps (avg.) I also tried 70gn: .636" @ 3117fps and 71gn: .7675" @ 3154fps. I chose the slower more accurate of the three.
Also, tried RL22 with the 180gn SMK. At book max (75.5gn) getting .346" @ 3133fps (avg.). This load also used the 9.5M primer.
Now I've never shot at or killed an elk, and I'm not sure these two bullets would be the best projectile to use, but being that the NBT and AB are so close in profile, I'd be inclined to switch to the 180gn AB with either of these two data(s) if I were going after elk. JohnnyK.

I have a Savage 112 BVSS in 300 WM with a 26" barrel. The best load I found with Accubonds 200grs was 80.5 grs of H-1000 and CCI 250. I get 2935 fps and it will hold 1/2 MOA (3 shots) to 600 yards. My OAL is 3.509" so I use that load single shot.
Last fall I shot a moose at 504 yds (measured with Leica CRF 1200). The bullet entered behind the right shoulder blew off the top part of the heart and exited through the left shoulder. The moose dropped in its tracks. Here's a photo:

Fed215 primers if you can get them. The 200 gr Accubonds are in a class by themselves when it comes to accuracy and downrange performance. Just about any powder like RL22, H4831, IMR7828SSC, H1000 or RL25 will give you a good chance of finding the right load. IME, the 200 gr Accubonds have an accuracy node around 2900 fps or a little less.

I've loaded 2 different 300 Win Mags, both Tikka T3s
Both seemed to like Hornady SST 180 grain bullets
I tried various powder in both. RL22, IMR7828, H4350, AA4350, IMR 4350, Hybrid 100V, and H4831SC.
One gun only seemed to like AA4350
The other liked H4350 and Hybrid 100V
Just a couple suggestions

I've been playing with a couple of 300 Win mags lately.
My Browning BBR shot the 200gr. AB really well with a heavy charge of RL25, Norma brass, and Fed. 215.
My Sako 85 shoots most everything well. It shoots 180gr. BT and AB well with RL25, CCI 250, and Norma brass.
I recently have been trying Retumbo with a 180gr BT. It shoots very well with 90gr of Retumbo, CCI 250 and Norma brass.

Thanks again for all the information everyone willingly shared with me. The load that works the best for my 26" Steyr is: 74.5 gr. RL-22 using 180 gr. Accubonds. Now if I can just call in that bull elk next week.

75g RL-22 w/180g bullet is usually a very good load in many 300 mags. Its anywhere from 3000-3100fps and well under 1 MOA in many different rifles.
Try using 79 gr. Imr 4831 with a 180 gr. barnes tsx bullet.
Chrno out of my 26" douglass barrel is 3155. Bullet seated out .070 from lands. Virtually one hole at 100 yds.

My old (ancient) Speer manual lists 81 gr. 4831 as max for 180 gr. bullet. I worked up to that, but found 81 gr. just a little too much, as primers started flattening. Dropped back to 79 gr. with no apparant pressure problems.......Every rifle is a little different, so start at 77 gr. and work up in 1/2 grain increments..........accuracy is the key. Any thing above 3000 fps is a deadly load.......
