nilgai hunting south texas

i've been hunting on some land we own for about 4yrs and have been trying to harvest a bull. anyone got any ideas how to better my chances? i shoot from tree stands and tripods only.thx

Where is your land at and how big is it??? I've killed a lot of nilgai off of the kenedy ranch. one thing for sure you better be shooting a large cal rifle bigger the better and put the shot where it counts. We always hunted oak motts in mid day and the flat country early and late. but i had most of the kenedy ranch to hunt on and it is thousands of acers. If your place is small then i would be looking for a crossing in a fence.

They tend to use one crossing nearly every time. but this is some times a very slow way to hunt
and can take a while.

My favorite way is to find a high place that overlooks a large plain and set up an ambush.
Approach it from cover and well before daylight.

Be prepaired to shoot a long way (800+ yards) because there eye sight is so good. Make sure
that you lay prone and camouflage your silhouette and have a total back drop. also I recomend you wear a face net just like you were bow hunting.

These things have tremendous eye sight and can pick you out even with camo.

This is a snipers dream hunt if they are hunted because they can see better than anything
I have ever hunted .

I would recomend at least a 300 RUM or even better a 338. they are not hard to kill just hard
to put down. The smallest cartrige I have ever used was a 7mm Rem Mag at 420 yards and
the big bull ran over 500 yards before dropping the 416 did not have that problem but range
was limited to 400 yards and I had to pass on a great bull at over 700 yards, so I now like
the 338.

nilgai are plains animals so their long-distance vision is excellent. If you're exposed at all, they will spot you.

What part of south Texas are you in. (County) I lived in Encino for a year. Burned areas with fresh green grass are the best areas to hunt Nilgai. If you can find a big thing of crap and stay on it you should be able to kill one. They tend to crap in the same spots and come back and check it from time to time. Maybe every couple of day but they will be back.
If you kill a extra please send me the meat lol. I would rather eat nilgai than beef.

our land is located about a mile west of la mariposa ranch in falfurrias tx. i shoot with a rem 7 mag. there are alot of dung piles all over the ranch. i know where they go through but seem to miss them when they pass. there is a lake by our land which is about a mile wide and about 3 miles long which is where some cousins harvested about 4 bulls already. i will try my luck next tuesday since it's my day off, shift work sucks lol. i just set up a new tree stand about 18 ft high by a crossing where i found a very large dung pile. hope it was worth the ticks haha. thanks for your feed back i will post some pics of bulls already harvested in the last 3 yrs.
