Well I have been wanting a decent front bench rest for my rifle for testing loads. The problem is that I just didn't have the money for a good one or even a cheap one, so I decided to build my own. The only thing I have to do yet is grind a point on the adjustable legs to keep it sit when shooting. Let me know what you think. Just remember, I'm not a carpenter, so no laughing at my wood work!

That should work, necessity and lack of cash is the mother of invention. The only thing that came to mind was it may be light, you could take and route out top and fill it with lead shot and a colored resin and it would give it a cool look while giving it more heft for cheap . You can chuck up the legs in a drill and spin them while running them on a grinder to make a nice point.

You may try a little longer bolt with the head attached so it gives you a knob of sorts when you want to adjust on of the legs. You know something to to grab onto for grip. Anything other than that will be discovered when you take it out and use it.

I like the idea of the shot with a clear resin. I think for now we will just throw a sand bag on it. That felt in the cradle is very slippery on my stock. I don't anticipate to much movement after I grind a tip on the legs.

As far as the nut idea, great plan. Maybe get a hold of some lock nuts that will fit the top. I was also thinking maybe a washer between the wing nut and wood on top.

Well I got a chance to use it today doing some pressure testing. As far as weight is concerned, appears to be a non issue right now. All 10 shots went off without a hitch. The rifle from what I could feel recoiled straight back and with the point ground on to the all thread, the base didn't move. So far so good I guess. More shooting to come.

I went out to do some load testing today and found a couple things with the rest. The first is that from prone it didn't work well for me. I guess I could have lowered it some, but I shot from the position it was in. My rifle recoiled as I would have hoped, but the butt pad was to high on my shoulder and I took a bit of a beating.

The other problem I had was the forearm had to much room and the felt was to stiff to allow the rifle to settle in it. So my cousin stapled in some packing batting that he had from work. This worked like a charm. It is about 3/4" think and soft, but not to soft. According to Goldy Locks, it was just right. It created a tighter fit on the stock and made centering the bubble of the scope a lot easier.

Despite the height issue, it was rock solid with a rear bag. I was able to level it up with the feat on fairly uneven ground. This is definitely going to help with my bench tuning of loads.

Thanks, it works well as far as I am concerned. It will take some getting use too. I usually shoot off of a bipod.
