210 Berger in the 300 RUM?

My 300 RUM shot 1" at 320 yards with 91.5 gr Retumbo. I don't have the velocity or seating depth, sorry. I just happened to be looking through my old notebook earlier today and saw that load, but I've sold the gun.

When reviewing the posted "favorite loads" of 300 Ultra Mag shooters I noticed that many of them are shooting at velocities that are easily obtainable with a 300 Wby. You would assume that people buy rifles chambered for RUM cartridges so that they can shoot at RUM obtainable velocities. However many seem content with Wby performance. Hmmmmm

My load for the 210 VLD loaded .015"-.020" off the rifling is 101.1 US869 in a Federal case with a GM215M primer. It usually holds less than .5moa @ 300yds and flys over my Oehler at just under 3,200 ft/sec. It also produces less pressure than any other powder that I've tried.

Not many shooters seem to be using the (Hodgdon) US869 but it is certainly worth a try.

What are your favorite loads? Accuracy? velocity? Thank you!

~3.843 OAL
94.7g Retumbo
-.010
2993 fps MV
26" factory barrel

-very accurate and consistent out to past 1k yds

--before that shot 240's at the same velocity with 104 or 104.5g US 869, but found that powder to be too temp sensitive for my liking, so back to the Hodgdon Extreme powders...

jmden,

I remember...

Are you still using that itty, bitty boolit? I thought we'd convinced you to go to the 'grande' 240 on top of 103+ grains of US869! :) ...

Did you go back to them? :D :D :D

Ouch! That long memory of yours hurts!!

The only powder I could get the velocity out of the 240s with that I wanted was US869, but I did not care for it's temp sensitivity, at least with those components, so this combo of the 210 and Retumbo seemed like the next best thing. I guess I didn't fly under the radar long enough! :D:D

After all these years a rifle dream materialized for me
A Remington 700 Alaskan Wilderness Rifle in 300 RUM. All I had around were some 210 Bergers so I loaded some under Retumbo. The following is a 3 shot group which measures .375" center to center. The load was 94 gr of retumbo at 3075 fps. I stopped there and went home. I am elated.

Ditto on the 94 grains of Retumbo and 210 Berger .010 into the lands. Three-shot group at 500 yards measured 1.963 inches. I had to go to the Winchester Large Rifle Magnum primer to get my chrono numbers to settle down, and, boy, did they ever. The numbers were 3,173, 3,175 and 3,178 for a 5 ES and a 2 SD. I cannot wait to get the crosshairs on a deer somewhere between 600 to 880 yards. The barrel is a 28.5 inch Krieger with one of Danny Huffman's muzzle brakes screwed on a Sendero action and stock.
