Building a .300 RUM and going to order a barrel soon. It will be more of a BR/Truck gun and will be 30" long. Contemplating twist rate through, 1:10 or 1:11. Wanted to shoot 180-210 grain bullets, need to see what shoots best. What are your thoughts on the twist rate?

I've got a 28" Broughton 11 twist on my 300 RUM. The most accurate bullet so far has been the Berger 210 VLD. I can't imagine that a faster twist would accomplish anything but I'd be interested to hear what other RUM shooters have experienced.

How do you like that Broughton? Seems like the more "hunting" style rifles are shooting the Broughton's and the BR guns are Bartlein's, but maybe I am reading that wrong.

It shoots less than .5moa @ 300 yds where I do most of my shooting. The 5C rifling is supposed to shoot faster and be easier to clean than conventional rifling. I'm not sure how anyone could verify these claims about the canted rifling barrels but I have read it on a few different forums.

So I split the difference, I ordered a 10.5. The guy I talked to said that a little bit faster for the heavier bullets would help it stabilize better. Now I just have to wait for the action and the barrel to show up...in March... :)

What bullet do you plan to shoot out of your 300RUM?

There can be a lot of difference between bullets of similar weight. e.g. Nosler AccuBonds are so long that a throat cut for those would have mega freebore for something like a Sierra MatchKing. Something else to consider along with twist...

I ordered a similar barrel; 300 RUM 30" 1:10
I originally wanted this barrel for 200gr AccuBonds. I have since changed my mind and am going with 200gr SMKs. Good thing for the long wait.
I keep worrying if I choose a good bullet or not and if it will shoot well.

Well, it's kind of funny. I have always been under the impression that the gun will choose the bullet and not the shooter. In other words, I would like to shoot a bullet from 180-210, it all depends on what the gun wants to shoot. I would like to look at some of the VLDs in that weight range. In talking with the guys at Bartlein, he made a few tweaks and recommendations. It was his idea to step up to the 10.5.

The 1 in 10 is the standard twist rate because it will shoot any weight bullet in .308 dia.

Slower twist rates will work but depending on velocity may not stabilize heaver bullets
as well.

If you are going to shoot 180grain or less at near max loads in the RUM the 1 in 11 will work.

I run a 10 twist in my 30 cal. If I were doing it again I would run a 9 twist in order to handle the high bc bullets that are available currently and in the works to come out in the future.

If you are shooting under 500 yards it will not matter.

Soooo, help me out here. All the bullets I have looked at are recommending a 1:11 or slower including the Berger's which I thought to be the highest BC available. What bullets are you looking at? 1:9 is a lot faster than anything I have read for something like the 300 RUM. Just trying to learn what I can. :)

I am currently running the GS HV 177g that recommends a 1 in 9. I am shooting them out of a 10 twist and they are good, but I am very fast so I am getting away with a questionable twist.

I like the mono metal bullets, and am also interested in aluminum tipped bullets that are out there.

i can assure you an 11 twist will stabilize a 210. 1k world records have been shot with 11 twist using a WSM case. a 9 twist and a rum case...i'd only do that if you were going to only shoot some of the new long missles.

And I agree with Dave. That is why I chose a 10 twist when I built mine. It is the all around for the 30 cal.
