I finally got a elk tag for Michigan, my guide told me to be able to shoot out to about 250yds. I am going to be using a 30-06, I have sighted in 3 different rifles a old Sears with a Shepherd scope which I think is a Win model 70, a Weatherby with a Nikon Prostaff BDC and a Win model 70 with a Leupold scope. If I clean these rifles and don't shoot them any more is my next shot going to be a different poi than before?

Most likely yes. But exactly how much different is unique to each rifle. You wont know till you shoot how much different your poi is. Could be minimal, or could be as bad as 3 inches in an extreme case. You just gotta shoot em to see. Lots of guys check thier zero before they hunt, and leave thier barrels fouled for the duration of the hunt. So if yu go that route, just know where your poi is on a cold bore with a fouled barrrel. Theres no other way around it, you gotta shoot it to find out. But, the good news is that theres still a little time before elk rifle season starts, so you can still fling some lead at different distances and see where you are.

+1 to the above

YOU SHOULD BE FINE .....

Like the other before .. I would zero rifle before I go out .where I was trained if you clean a barrel unless that barrel has about 10,000 rounds threw it its not worn down you will see change at around 6,000 rounds ... if so and you have shot 10,000 rounds or more I would change barrel. If you cant or fund that and have already clean need to rezero it and if cleaner has sat in it for a day or 2 and you have cleaned .. zero again..OTHER NOTES

-Sudden drop in temp more than 20-30 degrees that will change shot a few inches ok rise and fall based on temp rise and fall ever 10 degrees.

-Buck jerking flinching

-Pulmonary pause heart beats .

-Other things that will effect your shot in another sense is external ballistics every plus or minus 10 degrees in temp If i remember right will drop or rise your POI about 1 inch. Super long range which you wont have to worry about things like earth spin and all that . simple and stupid , point aim .

Coriolis drift- Summuary is deals with the sping of the earth mainly to a North south shooting situation . where talking major flight time 1700+ yards or so
Eötvös effect - Super Long range shooting as well relating to earth rotation as well in a east to west shooting situation dealing with long flight time as well being that your bullet will seem to strike lower or higher based on direction

-that load I would not make a wind call till 400 yards good guide will keep ya close you hit walk away happy .YOU WILL be shooting at less that 400 yrd with that load ...That round should shoot like a laser beam unless your in a hurricane and 25 mph hour winds ... I DONT LIKE TO SHOOT so close ... hah. Elevated positon of a crazy amount will do it too but still if less than what I would guess of maybe 300 yrd wont matter unless shooting straight down or something crazy . YOUR GUIDE KEEPS IT simple and stupid . YOU WILL BE HAPPY AT END OF THE DAY . IF YOU WANT TO SHOOT LIKE THAT .. near Yellowstone .. HAH look me up ... thats if you want to just up a bit .. shoot around .338 and start glassing other mountains , scouting water holes, and streams, looking for game trails. THATS HUNTING. no feed . no guide . Oh yea and if your shooting at that range ... that you are .. me a man mil your target out dont use a range finder and do a 2 point resection and find your way home.

SAD THING IS ..... THIS WOULD ONLY BE THE START FOR YOU.

HUH???!!!

*** was that all about?

Pretty sure at 10,000 rounds the barrel can be transferred to a shotun anyway as there is no rifling left except at the last 6 inches.

Clean and then shoot 1-2 if you are concerned.

You should reconfirm zero when you get there, either flying or driving to ensure your zero is still on.

Simple rule of thumb is 3" high at 100, and you should be on to around 250-270 with a 30'06 with the 165-180s anyway and no more than 3-4 low at at 300. Simple ballistics chart will confirm.

Anyway, you are more than covered for "minute of elk

set her 3" high at 100 and go for it. just remember you are 4-5" high at around 160-170.

Congrats on the draw.

That is just about the strangest post I think I've ever seen.
I agree to that.
I read it before anybody else posted to it and i did not want to say something because i thought maybe i missed something but it seems im not the only one that was scratching my head after reading it:rolleyes:

Was there even a complete coherent sentence in that whole post?

Because it was incoherent and posted twice, i think it was a 'bot'

this thread is taking a divergent turn from the OPs question. let me see if we can bring it back....

My recommendation is that whenever you travel with your rifle, verify your zero, then don't clean it. Since my deer rifle is only shot a few times during deer season, I pretty much don't clean the rifle for the entire season.

I don't do any big game hunting. That's what happens when you live in Il. and don't have the dough to go out west. I do a lot of varmint hunting though. My process is as follows.

I go out and zero my rifle. Current zero is 235yds.
Clean the barrel.
Shoot two more shots to foul the barrel and to see where my "cold zero" is.
After that nothing goes down the bore until after coyote season is over.
I would venture to guess I send more rounds down the tube for coyotes than the average BG hunter will in a season and I still don't see a reduction in accuracy.

Just remember to shoot straight and have fun.
