Hi to all, hope everyone had a good easter.

Can anyone tell me of a powder that will burn fast enough for a 338 lapua in a 25 inch barrel? I am currently using vithavori n170 but i dont think its burning it fast enough.
I am using 300g smk projectiles and the rate of twist of the barrel is 1-10.

Thank you

Hey Sniperboy...
I have tried US 869, Retumbo and Viht N-170. The Vihtavuori powder was my go to load and I got good consistency FPS @ 2675FPS ( low spreads etc)...I used 89 grains but I have a 28.5 inch barrel...Now I use Retumbo , 90 g and get about 2750...We switched to Retumbo because we were trying to simplify our loading procedure with fewer powders and using the same powder for different magnun rifles ( Lapua, 30-338, 300RUM ) and we did it! It makes things a lot easier...I think I remeber that Vihtavuori is a temperature "insensitive" powder like the extreme from Hodgdon. BTW Quickload says that with 90 grains N-170 in a 25 inch barrel there remains 1.84% of the powder unburned...IS that why you thought you needed a faster powder or were you meaning a slower powder? Shawn has had good luck using H1000, and has gotten a little less velocity but excellent consistency.good luck 30-338

I have done load development for 2 different Lapuas. The custom job liked H 1000, the Armalite liked RL 25. We were using 250 SMK and Lapua 250 Senar(sp). Niether one liked to be pushed to fast. Groups tended to open up when I pushed them.

Guys,

I just got a 338 Lapua also. Thanks for the info. I'm going to create a load for elk first with the Sierra 250grn BTSP, then move to the 300 grn SMKs. It sound like H-1000 is the one.

I have had alot better results with RL25 than H1000. Better velocity, accuracy, and conistent in my 338 edge.In fact the new lots of H1000 are so wacked out I won't touch it again...
