"When do you gotta send it back?" Brian asked. He was thinking about the same things I was: the smooth rugged looks, the comfortable feel, like a well worn saddle, the sub half minute hundred yard group I'd just shot, and the tight group I was printing on the 1000 yard gong. "She can shoot for sure," I agreed. Send the rifle back? I thought about it as I settled in for the last round. Boom...whap. Like hell!

The rifle was from Len Backus at Long Range Rifles, LLC. Len had called a week ago asking if I'd be willing to shoot and review one of his new and unfired rifles. I had done a fair job at not giggling like a schoolgirl as I accepted. As a bonus, I got him to send a Huskemaw scope along, too. Both products had captured my interest long ago, and I was really looking forward to the opportunity to assess them.

Thanks for the review. I'm especially interested in this review because I'm on month 17 waiting for my custom 7WSM. I'm expecting it real soon and can't wait. I've got some brass ready for a powder charge and bullet seating. I'm using all the same components you mentioned. Do you mind sharing the powder charge you used to get 2990 fps? Also, what is the barrel contour and length and weight of the rifle? Thanks.

Gordon,

RL 22
H4831SC
H1000

are a good place to start with a 7wsm. You should easily get around 2900 with 180's and 3000+ with 168's. If you do a search you will probably find quite a few recipes.

Mine loves RL22 at 69grs. I would start around 63grs. and shoot over a chrony and find the smallest extreme spread and go from there.

Lorenzo, thanks for writing the article. You have a way with words.

On another note, I got 2 phone calls from a repeat rifle customer (Nate H.) this week. He had bought a 338 EDGE from me last spring to give to his hunting buddy who frequently hosts him on some pretty nice hunts. Together they attended one of Shawn Carlock's shooting classes this summer.

Nate used one of his own rifles at that class and afterwards decided he wanted something that would shoot as well as the Long Range Rifles, LLC gun that his friend brought to the class. So Nate called me later to buy a 7 Dakota from me. That horsepower and accuracy would enable him to keep up with his friend's new rifle.

So anyway, Nate called me a few days ago to say he had shot his new 7 Dakota. First he took 2 shots to zero the scope at 200 yards. On his 3rd shot he was where he wanted to be on paper. Meanwhile his friend had been shooting next to him and the barrel on his new 338 EDGE needed to cool down a little on the 92 degree day so they were just resting and waiting. Then Nate offered to let his friend take a shot with the new 7 Dakota.

Well, the friend took one shot and the bullet hit Nate's own bullet hole at 200 yards. And Nate had to call me to tell me he's pretty satisfied. gun)

Then Nate called me the very next day again to say he and his wife (who hunts and shoots, lucky man) went out to the range and hit a 300 yard gong with the 7 Dakota. About then a dumb, young coyote walked in sight and Nita nailed it with the 7 Dakota at 185 yards. It has a Huskemaw scope on it, by the way.

So now I am hoping to get a 3rd phone call from Nate saying his wife wants a new gun, too. :D

Great review thanks!! I cant wait to get one of these rifles.

Would you mind sharing some shooting locations in the area? The spot you tested that looked amazing. I am in Davis County.

What kind of barrel life are you getting with the 7WSM? There was a article on 6mmBR stating that barrel life was short as in 800 to 900 rds though accuracy and speed was great even using the 180 gr bergers.

One of the LRH Sponsors (un-named by my choice). And all of the components that are available from Sponsors are obtained from Sponsors.

Gordon,
2990 was a guestimate, perhaps an optimistic one. I never chronoed the load. I believe the barrel a 27" #5. If you care to PM me, I'll discuss load specifics.

Frankly, I shoot everywhere. Anywhere there's enough room, especially areas I actually hunt. I rarely shoot at established ranges. Sorry, I'm not familiar with Davis county. There is a great long range facility in Price.

I've found the 7WSM superbly accurate. I can't give you a proven #. I'd expect double your numbers at the very least!

Lorenzo, I enjoyed your article. While i have never shot at a 1000 yard range I have had the pleasure of slinning lead down range at 600 yards multiple times, what a good feeling to know you are on target at that kind of distance. Thanks for the good work.

I shoot a 7 wsm. 26" Brux bbl 9"twist. 65.5grs of Re#22 Mag primer 162gr A-max produced 3150. I live in West Reno and have some great places to shoot all the way out to 1000 yds. Problem is ya gotta go early in the morning to shoot. Afternoons in NV desert is notorious for switch back winds. On calm days I can easily hit water filled 2 liter soda pop containers and some times 16 oz Rock Star cans. However even with .600+BC bullets 10-15mph winds can wage havoc on trajectory .Got to have a spotter.
