Hey guys just got drawn for mule deer hunt on the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Reservation. I need to setup my Allen Precision 338 for actual field use, right now it is naked. Need to get a sling (thinking about flush cups on left side) scope level, ect. I would really like to see how you guys are setting up your rifles.

Thanks Corey

I would have a front post for a bipod and skip the sling. Pick up an Eberlestock pack and carry the rifle that way. It's a ton more comfortable if you have to walk any distance. My rig is 15.5 lbs and it feels like nothing in my X1A1, it feels like 100 lbs after only a mile with a sling.

BTW, be sure you have a way to shoot sitting very well supported. Unless you luck out, a shot from the prone can be hard to find.

Good Luck!

Hi,

This is my LRH setup
338edge, 18lb rifle with bipod, sling, scope, magasine

I used 2 slings for better holding on each shoulder.
It is like a school backpack, I can run, jump with the rifle.
I have also a tactical pocket west for all LRH gear and some water and food for 1 day hunting trip.
All the weight is well tight to my body, and all my concern is to scout and glass for games.

Top is a 300 WSM Savage Low Pro. It is my primary LR rifle. The middle is a .308 Winny w/ Winchester Mod. 760 action and 18" military surplus barrel, Hogue Stock, the bottom is a Savage MKII with Leapers scope. I have shot 2.5" groups at 200yrds with it and bang steel at 240yrds with it. You have to shoot with your ear muffs off so that you can hear the bullet impact the steel. It is very faint, but you can hear it. Both 30's have EGW base w/ Nikon Buckmaster scope. 300 (6-18x40 w/SF Target Dot), 308 (4.5-14x40 w/SF Mil-Dot)

338 Edge AI built by Alberta Tactical

I use an Eberlestock pack as well, no slings for me. My spotting scope and tripod fit into the compartments of a J107 as well as the rifle. It's much easier on the shoulders than using a sling.

For field use, carrying the rifle and all you other gear is one of the most important considerations. Ive just ordered a "drag bag" that can be worn as a back pack with the rifle and everything else in it. Ive been down the sling route and decided that it sux. I even had one of the fancy 2 shoulder types... Plus you need a back pack anyways for water and binoculars, LRF, a bit of food GPS/PDA, ammo, blah blah blah...

As for a scope level, i ordered one off Sinclair international, the "offset scope level" i think its called so it can be easily seen from my other eye whilst looking thru the scope and without shifting my cheek weld, good price too.

Heaps of info on here, try using the search function, just about everything has been covered on here before.

Good luck

This is the rifle I will be hunting with this fall, as it is the only one I can shoot and handle the recoil on after shoulder surgury this past Jan.
It was built for me by Travis Redell of R BROS Rifles, and it is an accurate SOB!
6.5-06 AI shooting 140gr Berger's @ 3050 fps.
It sports a Nightforce 5.5x22-50 NP-R1 now. Also has a muzzle break on it now, as my shoulder couldn't take the recoil without it.
Travis builds a very accurate rifle, and I like this caliber alot.

Here is a 5 shot group shot this past Thurday . 2.25" C/C @ 500 yards.
Thanks, Travis

Groper I like the idea of carrying a drag bag than having two slings on my back.
What drag bag do you use?
