I have some cases with a really thick neck. The bullet pull is very tight. Could this be causing high pressure? If so would turning the necks just a little bit, help? Sounds good to me anyway:D It's expensive brass and I don't want to throw it away.

It isnt gonna raise pressure a bunch but will a little bit if there is not much clearance. Can you put a bullet back in a fired case without drag? If its tight then you really need to turn a bit off of them.
 
If the concentricity of the neck is .002 or under I wouldn't mess with those cases. I would get a Redding Bushing Type S sizer die and adjust your neck tention. The whole idea is to have consistent neck tention from case to case and unless you turn case necks all the time I wouldn't touch them. Running thin necks with a high pressure load doesn't bood well for long case life from my experience. You could take a possible 25 reloadable case to a 3-5 reloads in a heart beat if your not careful.

The heavy bullet pull is more likely caused by your die than the thickness of the neck. IOW you could have a neck thickness of .013" or .015" and still get the same bullet pull if you are sizing the ID to the same dimensions.

But like Bobby L said, try inserting a bullet in a fired unsized case. If it won't go easily then you will need to size to get a slightly larger ID and that may include outside neck turning

What kind of die are you using and what kind of bullet grip? i.e. .002", .003", etc.
 
Ok, I checked what y'all suggested,don't know why I didn't think of it, but a bullet will not go in a fired case at all pushing it by hand. It appears that the measurement of a fired case and a loaded case are the same. And a sized case is about .003-.004 smaller than either.
I am set up to turn necks but I don't like to do it. Looks like I'm going to have to here though:cool:
I reckon being the loaded and fired case both have the same measurements, the brass has nowhere to go when it expands on firing. And I am getting high pressures with less than max loads. I was attributing it to the heat, it's in the high 90s every day.

Ok so now one or two problems. Either the brass is way to thick or the chamber in the gun is way to tight. Outside neck turning may be your only option. But depending on how much you need to take off a inside neck reamer on your case trimmer may work just fine. Measure what the difference of a loaded, unfired and fired case and you can figure out whats going on. If you dont have much difference between a fired and loaded round you will need to neck turn and use a smaller bushing die setup to get around .002-.004 clearance in your chamber because its tight. If the brass is just .017 thick then you better get it down towards the .015 range for it to work. If you need any help PM me and i will get you on track.
