I received a phone call from the fine folks at Oehler this evening and they shipped my
new 35p today.

As most of you know they stopped making them a few years ago due to the demands of
the military and most of us were devastated by the news because they were one of the
best if not the best and we have become dependent on there accuracy and dependability.

A few months ago they announced that they were going to make a limited run of the 35p's
and I jumped on one because mine is 20+years old and even though it still works perfect
and they will continue to service it I felt that I should go ahead and buy a new one just
in case.

They have put together a complete 35p with hard case, sky screens, two tripod stands
and a 4 foot bar with detents for correct spacing.

If anyone is looking or needs one you better sign up for one now they are on a limited
run and I don't know if they will ever be offered again.

Very sage advice-----I would not trade mine for anything! One of the best tools that I own!!!

J E, good to hear you got their call. I too am waiting on mine. Several months ago I ordered one and they said I'd get a call sometime in August and would probably ship before end of August...Hope I hear from them soon. When you get yours let us know how it looks.

Don't worry . When I talked to Qehler about mine they said that I was next to the last person
to call (I just barely made the first Cut) and they said that the next batch that was going to be
shipped would be withen a couple of weeks.

Apparently they were overwhelmed by the response and have decided to assemble more
So that everyone that wants one will be taken care of.

I'm in your boat!

I also received my phone call from Oehler the same day JE did, and mine is in transit also. I'll be running this 35P unit concurrently with my other two chronographs (Oehler 33 & PACT) the first few times out, to get a feel for the relative velocity readings. One bad shot and I'll take out seven (7) skyscreens! gun) gun)

Very interesting and innovative !!!!

I have never tried this but it sounds like a very good way to check other chronographs
out .

I had to think about a way to do this and think I have figured out how to do it with out
destroying the screens, but if you don't mind sharing how you do it I would appreciate it.

As they say, I may not have many good ideas but I can reconizes one when I see it.

In the past I have just shot a minimum of 5 rounds through each chrony and looked at
average velocity of each and with the proof channel it normally told me if one of the
chronographs were off.

If they are placed together there will be a little loss in velocity over the 4' spacing bur if
all of the screens are spaced the same they should read near the same velocity.

Great idea.

Absolutely. Just have to build a skyscreen rail that will hold the variety of different makes and models of skyscreens. Other than that, it's just stringing the correct skyscreen cables to their proper jacks on the chronograph units. Then each shot fired will be recorded over each different chronograph concurrently.

Here's a photo of the skyscreen rail I constructed to mount the 4 skyscreens for my current Oehler 33 and PACT chronographs:

ChronoSetupwithSoapyWater_4-24-10.jpg

The spacing on the Oehler skyscreens is 6'. The spacing for the PACT is 54". The PACT can be programmed to accept any skyscreen spacing in inches. The Oehler can be programmed for any whole number of feet, so it's set for the 6 foot skyscreen spacing. Each bullet fired is timed by both chronographs concurrently.

BTW, I'm using the current model Oehler Skyscreen IIIs with the Oehler 33. An improvement over the older model Oehler skyscreens IMO and experience.

I haven't decided if I'll try to mount the 35P skyscreens on this same rail or not. It'll be simple to mount the outer Primary skyscreens adjacent to the two existing Oehler skyscreens. Plenty of room to mount another skyscreen on both ends of this skyscreen rail. I'd still have to weld a 1/2" piece of aluminum tubing midway down the rail in order to mount the Oehler Proof channel skyscreen. I should be able to figure out how to weld a mount on for the middle proof-channel skyscreen without too much brainstorming. It doesn't have to be aesthetically pleasing or pretty. Just functional.

And here's what I use to protect the skyscreens when I shoot over them at 1000 yds:

AR500PlateProtectedSkyscreens.jpg

Note the bullet splash mark from two outings ago at 1000 yds. The AR500 has already protected my four skyscreens from bullet damage once. I don't mount the plastic sunshields over the skyscreens when shooting over them at 1000 yds.

And the adjustable stand to hold the 1/2" AR500 protective steel plating:

Thanks Phorwath !!!!

Looks neat and functional.

I also use a blast shield for the big rifles and it would protect the screens if used .

There is all ways the need to check out another chronograph and your system will work
very good.

Again thanks.

J E,
What is your blast shield constructed of? Is it doughnut shaped and you shoot through the hole in the middle? What happens if a bullet should hit this shield just 15 feet off the muzzle? Is all H_ll unleashed right in front of your nose? :)

Originally it was a thick piece of plywood with a triangular shaped hole and two horizontal
lines 2"" apart one for the scope and the other one told you where the bullet path was.
If you couple see through the hole and see the top line was even with the cross hairs you
were safe to shoot.

Now it will have a good heavy piece of steel with the same hole and lines in case of a mistake.
I dont know how thick it will have to be because will be used mostly standard calibers just to
tell me the accuracy of the chronographs.

For the realy big stuff the plate would have to be 2''+ and would be just to heavy to mount on
the plywood.

I can't imagine shooting a screen but I know it can and has been done.

I like the free standing setup you have and I may go this route.

2"+ AR steel plate? You must be one stout fella. I don't think I want to shoulder fire any of your "really big stuff"... :D

My .280 RCBS Improved didn't even leave a perceptible dent in the 1/2" AR500 steel plate at 1000 yds. Took the paint off and that was it! A .284 162 gr Amax if I recall correctly.

I'm too worried about the one-in-a-million error of hitting steel plate that close to my face to use a steel skyscreen protector for collection of MVs. And with plywood, any hit might expand the bullet and take out all downstream skyscreens anyhow. I've thought about the use of some stiff cardboard, but I've not yet experienced muzzle blast caused problems with my skyscreens when set out there at a distance of 15 feet from the muzzle.
