Help with TSX

Loading for a factory Rem. 700 vssf 22-250. 1-14 twist. Looking for a "do all"
load. Some may have tried to help previously on bullet selection. "22-250 for deer"..... Anyway We chose the 50 gr. TSX and am now having a heck of a time getting them to group well. have loaded R15, and Varget, the later being my usual go-to powder for this rifle. Are there any tricks to loading the lighter TSX bullets? I shoot the TTSX and MRX bullets in my 7RUM and have no problems. These little guys seem to be finicky out of an otherwise accurate rifle.

I would make sure barrel is completely copper free and then try IMR4895 and BR2's. JohnnyK.

I load tsx and ttsx in 06 , 2 300', 375hnh , 404j and 416 rigby and never had problem getting them to shoot well, have not tried them in 22-250. That being said my thought would be twist rate, check with Barnes and see what twist rate they recommend. In 308 caliber when you get to the 180 grain bullets they recommend 1-10 twist, considering your using a 50 grain tsx I'm assuming it is a little on the long side compared to a 55 grain lead and copper bullet which is why I suspect your twist rate.

On Barnes site they only list two powders for the 50gr since it's a new bullet and their data was from a 1/14 twist barrel. I would give them a call and see what powders and seating depth. You might have to go with the older 53gr bullet

Better look into some Boretech CU+2 for a bore cleaner. Some rifles will copper foul quickly with the solids. This is the only cleaner I have found that will get the copper out.

have you tried h380?its what i use in my 250 and works well.my loads are 39g h380 and tsx,i have a 1-10 twist.also they do foul a barrel sometimes

The following text is taken from one of the customer reviews on Midway USA site for the Barnes TSX 22 caliber 45 grain bullet.


According to Ty at Barnes Tech Support this 45 gr. bullet was designed specifically for .22-250 with a 1-14 rate of twist. The heavier 53 gr. Triple Shocks will not always stabilize in a .22-250 with a twist slower than 1 in 12, even at the higher velocities.


So for the 1-14 twist rate, I would use this bullet first and look to powder or copper fouling etc.....

I too had trouble and Ty at Bearnes told me to go with 45gr in a 1:14 start .050 off the lands and move back from there and he also told me to send them with alot of speed and they will shoot.

I took my Browning micro in 22-250 to the range with the load of 38.5gr of H380 and the bullet .050 off the lands and groups are right around 3/4" I didnt need much more accuracy than that so i didnt play with the load but I bet it would get better.

I've been loading the 53 gr TSX in my 1 in 14 twist Remington 788 for a few years now. I use 34gr of varget, Win large rifle primers in Win Brass. I have taken quite a few deer with this combination and it really works well. I limit my shots to under 300 yards and make sure I put it in the right place. It shoots well inside 3/4 moa. I've yet to have a deer run further than 50 yards with this set up. I'm doing some work ups now with IMR 8208 to see how well it shoots. I hope this helps...

Thanks guys, all good info. sidetracked on bull elk for a few weeks but will be back on the little one's soon..............
