Second varmint for the year!

Well it was a pretty wind day. We had a wind from our 7 and it was variable. The g-hog was working his way down the field toward his hole. We had a hard time tracking him because of the grass height. I sent one its way with no effect at 725yrds. He was on the move so it was hard to get him. We finally saw him standing up next to a fence post. Found out later it was his hole. He was at 648yrds. I let one fly with about .25MOA in left windage nailing the little sucker. My spotter said he dropped, but wasn't sure. After I recovered from recoil I saw him flop and kick. We walked up hoping to find him. Looks like he had a little spunk in him because there was a blood trail directly in his hole. There was blood on the post, and about a 24" radius. So it was terminal, but not immediately fatal. There were some small meat chunks also. That is my longest to date by 20yrds. It was hit with a 300 WSM and 208 A-max hand loads. I figured I may have hit him a little low. I forgot to turn it some MOA after zeroing resulting in a lower shot.

Just curious here,what scope brand and what power were you using?also what reticle.....I'm lookin into a new scope just have not decided what yet....and great shootin by the way!!

I use a Nikon Buckmaster 6-18x40 w/Side Focus. For reticule it has an 1/8MOA target dot. I usually shoot it at 18x at those distances. I think when the time comes I will be upgrading to the Sightron 8-32 or 10-50 or the Vortex Viper 6-24 with the dead hold reticule or the target dot again. I really like target dots, because it keeps everything simple. I would like a little more power for the really long shots. I can see g-hogs at 1000, but would like a little more clarity. For the money I have to work with the Nikon works great. There customer service is awesome as well. Hope this helps you out. If you have the money the Sightron SIII and Vortex Viper series are great scopes to look at.

Thanks for the info! Those vortex vipers are looking very tasty I've never looked at the sightron stuff but ill check it out. I just want a fine/thin reticle in either mil dot or some kind of varmint reticle. My bushnell elite 6500 is 16x and a mil dot but I feel like the reticle covers a lot of my target cause it so thick.

That is the problem I ran into with my 4.5-14 Buckmaster that is now on my 22LR. If you go with the Target dot or the dead hold BDC, then I think it should be fine enough. I have looked through the Sightron's. They are very clear even at max power. I think the best option though if you have the coin would be the Leupold mil-dot. I know they are a fine cross hair. Though looking at the EBR1 reticule from Vortex looks like a great ballistic reticule and should be pretty fine in itself.

Sightron makes some quality glass and has some fine reticles. Check out the Leupolds (VX3 and MK4). You can get them with the TMR (tactical milling reticle). The crosshairs are fine and they don't actually cross in the center. They have a tiny gap. So when sighting a tiny target at great distance, it will not cover it up. Also, rather than mil-dots, it has lines marking each .5mils. With this finer graduation, it's pretty easy to call corrections if you miss.

Thanks trebark you actually answere my next question lol I have seen that reticle but could not remember what it was on. If funds allow I'm strongly looking into the leupy mark 4 . And now even stronger since u reminded me of that......the kind of hunting is hard on the wallet lol!!
