I have been back and forth on this several times with different guns. Here is my latest thought. do I rebarrel my remington 700 in 300 win or do i sell the remington and buy a savage 111 long range hunter in 300 win? the remington is prettier. but rebarreling will be about 700 dollars total. or i can sell it and add about 200 and get the savage. even though it is uglier. but out of the box accuracy should be fantastic. what do you guys think?

$700 to rebarrel ... OUCH :( ! Another vote for Savage.

BTW, I don't see anything ugly about any of the Savages. Below is my old trusty 111F in .300 WM. As seen all stock except for a Holland QD MB (2003) and RB trigger (2007). Shot the speed goat last year at 338 yards (*) with factory ammo HSM Hornady 178 A-Max. All meat donated.

Good luck!

yeah 700 to rebarrel. a krieger unfluted is about 300 and to the the action trued and bolt face squared and lug lapped and barrel installed is about 350 so when its all said and done im looking at about 700. It is looking like savage is winning this debate. anyone else want to chime in?

The money spend truing the action is a one time cost plus I like getting barrels throated for a certain bullet etc. My new 270Wby up the gunsmith now was a 30-338mag before that was a 30-06.

The money I spend on a rifle is spend money and I've normally have enjoyed shooting the rifle. Sure I could sell the rifle recoup some money but I just as soon rebarrel then get something maybe alittle better than what I was was shooting in a factory rifle. I always thing of it as stepping stone up into the accuracy game.

I don't want to get into a contest with anyone over factory vs rebarrel rifles. Well good luck

How does the 700 shoot. If very well then.........

Why not search around for a new sendero type 'new' take off barrel in 300 Win and simply swap barrels skipping the truing, blue printing?

I did that with a super great shooting 338 Win moving up to a 338 RUM. It shoots great. I think I kinda lucked out but for 40 bucks plus 125 install its a fairly inexpensive experiment. And it would be an experiment.

Keep in mind I come from the cheap seat area over here in Idaho.:D

I had my Remington Sendero 700 RUM rebarreled witha brougton barrel and my smith said that my action didn't need truing . It has shot a 300 yards group at .691 and a 752 yard group at 2 inches . Can a out of the box savage do that ?:) stick with the remington just my .02

I have a .300 WM, 26",Stainless . REM. varmint contour. BERGARA bbl, 1-10 twist, new in the box, for $300.00 shipped to you. These are pre threaded and chambered so you can do the job yourself, they headspace like tha Savage (with a nut) I have built several rem. 700's for myself (just finished a .223 this weekend) and all are spectacular shooters. The .223 took me and evening to finish, pull old bbl, lap lugs, true recoil lug, install and headspace bbl, adjust trgr., load test rounds, test fire. Took it out yesterday, and with 55 v-max and n-133, shoots "bug holes" at 100 yds.

Mike,

Just my .02, but from what im reading your considering spending more on another factory rifle, than you would a semi custom?

If it was my money, I would blue print that remmy with a custom tube. No doubt Savage builds a nice rifle, but why are the Remmy actions so sought after and popular?

I traded some AR parts for a 700 .243, and sent it straight to Ed Vandenberg for a Schilen barrel, trigger job, and blueprint. Ive sold 2 Savage 111's since.

I'm gonna be the nay sayer here among the savage fans and say you have a jewell in the rough with that 700.

(sorry Savage fans)

Texan. I have owned one savage it was a very nice 11BTH in 243 and the thing just would not shoot. so I am slightly leary. however from what I hear the savage is quite a rifle. My gunsmith actually reccomended I try the 111LRH because he has one in 300wsm and loves it. I can always go back and sell the savage if need be. But to an extent I agree the remington is quite sought after. but it takes more money to make one shoot sometimes than it does to buy a savage ..maybe? Mine shoots good I just want to try something different.

I would break it down a little more, do you like the trigger on the Rem or the Accutrigger? Do you like the stock options on one or the other? It's kinda a toss and I would need to look at the whole package, I'm bullish on Savage right now because they can be easily worked on and I dig the Accutrigger. But you already own the Rem so why not take it to the best level it could be at. You can't beat a custom barrel, Rem or Savage boils down to which little things do you like about the action. I did pick up a Savage 116 with real nice wood and the medium weight barrel with large flutes and man it was awesome, my wife almost got a gun :D
