I have a previous post for this, but I think it died off perhaps. I have a rather very expensive build I am putting together. Very expensive for me atleast. So far the dollar is up to over $5000, and i'm still not done yet.

I have to pick out a good bottom metal here soon. But what might help determine which BM to go with, I will list a little of what I have that might help that determination:

*MCS - T4 set for Rock Creek M24/M40 barrel contour
*Stillers TAC-30 action

A gentlemen at Stiller's highly recommended a Jewel trigger for this setup. I don't know much about the Jewel or what BM I should go with if I am going to use a Jewel.

Here is a list of the action's/trigger's I was considering using for this build:

Bottom metal - Surgeon, D.D Ross, Badger Ordnance.
Trigger's - Timney, Jewel, "other"

I take it the actual military M24/M40 is using a standard R700 action?

I like the hole service rifle concept on durability and that is my goal here. With that said; I know how popular Jewel's are in the BR world and I know they work well in hot and cold condition's; but how solid are they?

Still needing some feedback for these last steps so I can start running with it.

Thanks for the time!
Cheers,
RiP

I hope I'm not understanding this right. Are you saying that you already have 5K in this project and all you have, so far, is the action and the stock ???

It would of added up a little better if I would of mentioned the PR - Heritage 5-25x56 scope I purchased in that math.

My apologies. I'm not sure how I left that out of the equasion there. I have managed to save exactly $300.oo for discount's during all of this madness :) Everything is in order except specific's I still have to give Rock Creek, picking out my bottom metal and trigger.

Sorry about the poor com's.
Cheers,
RiP

Are you in the military? Do you know what this is?

If the rifle is to be used in the Field , then I would NOT use a Jewel trigger .

For Tac or field/hunting rifle , I would only use one of the 3 below .

A Rem factory trigger , re-worked

A Shilen

Or a Huber Tactical 2 stage .

A Jewel is fine on a Target rifle , BUT is not a reliable enough trigger when exposed to sand/dirt/dust etc , and for that reason , I would advise against the Jewel .

I was given some bad information than. Someone at Stiller Precision told me that even in the field he highly recommended them. I couldn't tell you why or why they would not work well in the field. His reason was that the Jewel doesn't require any sort of lubricant.

Anyways this is where I stand. I called and talked to Dan from D.D Ross and had quite a long conversation with him about this build. I told him exactly what I was looking for in a rifle. Long story short, without telling to much; he is who I am going to be working with for this build.

I have a couple question's:

1. Internally what are the differences between a McMillan A-4 and a Manner's T-4 stock?
2. What is the difference between a standard Remington action and Stiller Tac-30?

Thanks a lot,
RiP

Jewell triggers are well associated with the BR community so unforetunately some think they are not up to par for hunting...not true. There are many right here on LRH that have Jewells on their hunting rigs. Here's a link to Jewell triggers...note there are those for BR and those for hunting.

Hi Chas1!

I'm not exactly building a BR rifle. It's a tactical rifle just to fill ya in. With that said it's going to differ from BR a lot and hunting rifles a little. I have no experience with the Jewel trigger but looking at the actual trigger mechanism itself makes it look fragel. I have decided to go with either a Timney trigger. It's not really much different than a tuned up R700 really.

RiP!
You're still working on this project?!

Still can't give you any advice on BM. But Jewell triggers work just fine for field guns.

Talk the talk and walk the walk....

Hi Trebark!

Yes; I am still research'n lol! Funny I know. I figure I might as well use max time before I make a finalized decision on anything. I had a smith picked out and even had a lengthy talk on the phone with him until I researched some more and read some negative feedback. I'm glad I did my research.

Still looking :)

Ripper, lots of foks here use Timney here on LRH also. I'm sure you'll be happy with it.
