I am new here, so first off hello. A few months ago I got a newly made .338 win mag from a gunsmith friend of mine. It has a Einfield action with different Mauser parts tossed in for good measure, it is glass bedded, and free floated with a muzzle break. 21" barrel 24 with the muzzle break.
I am having a hard time getting it to shoot under 3" groups at 100 yards. Strangely it shoots better at 200 and 300 yards. I am loading the brass with H4350 Remington 9 1/2 M primers and hornady 225 grain SST. At all powder loads I get the exact same results.
Dose anyone have any suggestions as to what I should try next? The scope is an old redfield 3x9 it dosent seem to be moving around in the mounts. Not bragging just saying this because I know it will come up. I shoot sub MOA with all of my rifles except this one.

Rifles have individual tastes. Switch bullets, switch powder, switch primers, change OAL, change powder charge, etc. etc. etc.

Loaded for a 338 win mag that was a problem, a Sako Finnbear. Finally got it to shoot OK with IMR4831, Fed215 primers and 225 gr TSX's.

+1
I like the H4831 and the new H4831 sc.

I get a little better Standard deviation using the Rem 91/2 mag primers than with others
(They are a little cooler than the 215s).

Hey thanks I am going to the store wed to get bullets from 180 grain on up, I am also going to switch to 4831 and give it a try.

When I got home today I took the rifle out of the safe to clean it after yesterdays range time, and I hear a rattle when the rifle is shifted. Turns out the recoil has smashed the glass in the scope loose. So I am hoping that its been loose in there for a while, and just finally gave up the ghost. lightbulb

Hey, that'll do it!

Everyone has recomendations, but mine are

Barnes 210 TSX
Nosler 225 Accubonds

RL19
RL17 (not much reloading data for it but it should be good in the 338 win mag)
IMR4350
IMR4831

Fed215 primers (if you can find them)

Zeiss 3x9x40 Conquest (around $400.00 and the best bang for the buck)

Enjoy

Sorry to hear about the scope. Keep us posted on which scope you choose and then how your rifle shoots.

I wouldn't change your powder at all, If you have not all ready done so trim your primer pockets all to the same depth, and if you can mic all of your brass to see if there is alot of neck thickness variations, to sort the good form the bad so that you can have cosistant, and straight loads.

however a good resipe "might"
I love Sierra game kings @ 250gr. with the right ammount of RL 19, gave me my best results.

The 338 win. is by far my number one pick for hunting here in Alaksa

Faris in Fairbanks.

Well I got a cheep ol scope back on this gun for now. Still saving for the one I want. I needed to get this rifle up and running because deer season is almost over and the hog hunting is going to start. I changed my load up a bit, and went with the same 225 grain SST, 58.0 grain of H4350 and an OAL of 3.319. It shot 2 inches at 100, so I have to tighten that up a bit. Today I am going to try 60.6 grs at 2400 FPS, and 63.2 grs at 2500 FSP. Keeping the OAL the same for now.
