I just ran some test loads in my 338 edge with the berger 300's...Very impressive.

My first test was only at 100 yards and next Im going out to 500 and 1,000 at night without wind to get the real story.

I loaded 91 gr...92 gr...and 93 grs of H1000 on the lands....same 91,92 and 93....010 off the lands....020, .030 and .040 off the lands...45 bullets total in sets of 3 shots.

Best group was At 91 grs...at .010 off the lands...I shot 3 bullets in the same hole for a 0.080 group..less than 1/10 of an inch group at 100 yards...First shot..2780 fps,,seond shot 2782 fps...3rd shot..freaking chrono broke..

From there as I increased the load the group spread out and at 93 grains..the bolt was sticky, but the primers still looked ok.

Also as I played around with the seating,,the groups started to spread out.

This berger shoots better than my smk at 100 yards in my 338 edge, the next step is to take it out..way out...I will post the results and a foto of the target next week.

Also, the true velocity was probably closer to just over 2800 fps, because I had the crono at least 15 feet from the muzzle....

338 edge
14.75 pound gun
BAT action
DE break
Best load...91 gr H1000
.010 off the lands
Berger 300's
CCI 250 LRM primers
2780 FPS

Kellyzier,

You didn't shoot the chrono right? Just kidding!

That's awesome shooting. What barrel are you using?

Chrono at 15' you won't get more than 7 fps with that

hight BC bullet. Meaning MV corrected should be around 2788 fps.

Let's know how she does at long range.

Thanks for the info. I just received mine yesterday. How are they pressure wise and velocity wise compared to the SMK. I've heard they take a little more powder to get them up to the same velocity.
Thanks and good shooting.

No, I think it's just getting old, I did shoot one of the legs last year though....

It's a Defensive Edge gun...Hart barrel, 1-10 twist, 30 inch, with Shawn's big flat top break...

Thanks for the heads up on the speed....I can't wait to get this bullet out to distances..Shawn had a handful of guys shoot the Berger at just over a mile this year and they all hit the target at 1moa...He's said it really shoots well way out there.

What brand chronograph? Drives me nuts when my chrono's don't behave.

Honestly, they seem to be right on par with the 300 gr SMK's. Although I have heard others say they are getting slightly more velocity out of the Bergers.

Good info, thanks for sharing. Sorry to hear the chrony broke. Let us know how it goes at further distances.

Got two more tests....tomorrow we will shoot in the day to validate the trajectory and then some shooting to 1000 in the wind,,then one of these nights this week I hope to shoot in the dark with no wind to really see how they group...more later

How is the recoil with that load, and can it be shot without a brake?

thanks.

edge.

I shot a few of the bergers last weekend as well, from an edge AI, I loaded .010 off the lands, went from 90 - 95gr of H1000. I shot some nice groups out at 300 yards, groups stayed in the 0.2moa range till 94gr. Then the groups hit 4" low and went out to 1.5moa, all width, the vertical grouping was still under half MOA. 95gr were also low and very wide. No pressure signs, case head expansion was still pretty much nil. Looks like 94gr gets me into nose slump velocities.

I am going with 92gr as it shot with the least vertical. Unfortunately I don't have a chrono, a "friend" put a bullet into mine and hasn't replaced it yet... and he hasn't returned my calls for a while.

It will be interesting to see how the bergers hold up for you at a bit more range. Looking forward to your report.

LB,
'Friend' can be defined in many different ways by different people... Buy another Chrono and your 'friend' will probably return your calls once again...:)

I haven't read or heard anything further (recent) from Berger on the suspected 'nose slump' problem with their first run of 300gr .338s. I visited the Berger Bulletin web site just a couple days ago, but saw no new information. The last Bulletin I found was the original one providing notification of the suspected nose slump problem, dated June 2010. Keep thinking we should be getting additional information or an update from Berger any day now.

edge.

I use a very big slab break from Defensive Edge...My ten year old son shoots it, so it's really mild. Not sure how it would feel without the break though..Probably kick like a mule......I long range hunt and shoot and always wear plugs. I find the break gives me that added accuracy that I need way out there past 1,000 yards. I hope to shoot tomorrow and will post the results soon after
