22-250 Fast twist heavy bullets

Hey fellas. I know bad form for my first post asking for information but I'm at a loss for info. A little background; Been shooting for years, handloading for about 1 1/2 years. Shoot 22-250 and 223. Rebarreled a Savage 12fv with a McGowen 24" 1:8 twist straight cylinder 22-250rem.

Started breaking in the new barrel with what I know, 53-60gr bullets with H380. Tried some varget and wasn't impressed with the metering but I'm past that now. Loaded some 70gr SP with h380 and didn't do too bad but that's the max I can find data for.

I'm in the process of locating load data for 22-250 with an 80gr bullet. I'd prefer any knowledge with Reloader22. And from what I've seen here, from searching,the guys with the AI versions seem to like about 39gr of Reloader 22 to start. Is this going to be about right for the 22-250rem? If anyone has recipes that are low so I could work my way up. I'm also open to different powders. I would be most appreciative. I'd prefer not to have the gun go bang with projectiles out the wrong end.

Re#22 in 24" Standard 22-250?????

I shoot a 22-250AI with 26" BBL. Re#22 is too slow for that. Try H4350 I'd say start with 35grs. Plus jam that bullet into rifling lands.That is you say 80 gr bullet right? Check out Reloader's Nest - a reloaders resource

Like Iron Worker, I shoot an AI version of the 22-250. In playing around with it, I found that Ramshot Hunter was able to get extreme velocity with 60 grain bullets. Try it and start around 34 grains and then work up. Good Luck

Fast twist 22-250

These loads were worked up in a Savage LRPV 1:9 22-250.
The load worked with 80 gr. Bergers but 75gr. AMAX's were cheaper so that's what I shot the most of. I tried lots of different combos & what I got the best results with was anywhere from 37.5 - 40.0 grs. H4831SC. Liked it so much I bought an 8 lb. jug. I used an old 8mm arrow shaft for my drop tube so I wouldn't get a ring around the AMAX during the seating operation. I don't no what the velocity is. It didn't matter much to me because it was so accurate. The home range is out to 400 yards so the come-ups were easy. I had no pressure signs what so ever, but as always start low & work up for your rifle.

I have just decided to build a 22-250 w/ a Mauser VZ 24 action that I have. I want to shoot the heaver pill --60-80 grain. I would appreciate any suggestionns you may have. Has anyone already done this?? I am thinking 26 in barrel, maybe number 3 contour. Any suggestion please on twist? Is there a happy medium??. I want this to be a long range weapon, out to 5 or 6 hunndred. { that's long for us } What do you guys think about Douglas barrels?

I have a Douglas premium barrel on a 220 Swift Improved, ( 220 Weatherby Rocket) with a 1/8 twist and it is doing fine. I use 75 grain Hornady A Max, Swift Scirocco and 80 grain Nosler J4 bullets. I have had great success Rockcreek Barrels and Krieger in other guns. Both of those are cut rifled barrels and they do take a little longer to break in but they shoot extremely well.

If you're going to lob 80gr bullets you're going to be in the 1:8 range. Douglas make a fine barrel. 5-600 shouldn't be to god-aweful difficult with a fast twist, you can still develop plenty of speed. Loading with 80's it will be single shot only, once I got over 70gr in mine I was never able to load to mag length. But what's the fun in that???

Your biggest problem and I'm sure the hint will come across when you place the order, make sure whoever chambers the barrel understands what your plans are for the gun. Hopefully they'll use a reamer with a little more freebore.

I am shooting a 22-250 Ackley with a 70gn home swaged boat tail spire point bullet made with Sierra J-4 jackets. My barrel length is 27" and the twist is 1 turn in 9".
The load I have settled on with this rifle and bullet for long range shooting is using 43.5gn Reloader # 19 and is achieving 3440 fps average with a 15 fps ES.
This is put up in fire formed and neck sized R-P cases using the CCI# 450 LRM primer.
Longest range to date with this load was 870 yards and the load was holding up well at this range. Target was a steel gong that would be roughly equal in body size to a coyote not counting the head or tail. Not sure on what grouping would be at this range but only interested in hitting coyotes.

I built a 22-250 on a BRNO 98/22 action and really like it. Mine has a 12 twist 26" #4 Shilen barrel on it. It does its best work with RL-17 and 53 VMAX or 69 SMK's.

The beauty of the Mauser action is that you can load whatever bullet you want, to whatever length fits in your chamber, and still feed from the mag.

I think 26" is a good barrel length for 22-250. The #4 profile heats up pretty quickly, though, so if you plan to do any sustained shooting, I would go heavier. The '98 Mauser action isn't known for its rigidity, though, so you have to be careful how much barrel you hang on it. Something close to a Remington varmint contour, such as a #7, should work well.

If I had it to do over again, I would go with the AI chamber and an 8 twist, along with the heavier barrel mentioned above. My rifle wears a B&C stock w/aluminum bedding block. A laminate stock with a good bedding job would work well also.
