Project 22-250 AI

I am working on a project and am thinking about doing a 22-250 AI with 75gr A-max bullets for a little long range shooting/chucking. I have a 1:9 twist 26" Savage takeoff barrel from my .223 that shoots lights out to rechamber. I am in the process of getting a Savage action with accutrigger and .473 bolt face to use so it should mate up well. I am also concidering a 220 Swift Improved or a 22-243 wildcat. Pushing a 75gr Amax to around 3500-3600fps yields some amazing ballistics!! Any thoughts on this setup? Any other calibers you would reccomend?

You might want to think about a 26" to 28" inch 1-8 or 1-7 twist with that cartridge, using the 80gr & 90gr for LR work... It would a great combo.

I rechambered a Savage 22-250 in 22-243 with the factory slow twist barrel I was able to achieve 4600 fps with a HOT (little to hot) load behind a 40grn blitzking. The accuracy is great & the rechamber job cost me ~$150, hard to beat that combination. The Swift improved, as far as I have heard, is a notorious barrel burner (not that the 22-243 isn't). I'd stick with the 22-243 with a fast twist & go with the 75grn A-Max, that combination is wildly successful here in north eastern WY, it's proved to be a great round.

I am starting a 22-243 build what can you tell me about it; powders, bullets, accuracy. vel, case prep, possible barrel life, and dies. i wanted a fast 22 but didnt care to fireform cases for the 22-250 ai so i thought i would try this just made my order.

My rifle still has the factory 22-250 Barrel, so unfortunately the twist is too slow to stabilize the heavy high BC bullets. I ordered my 3-die set from Redding which was readily available, brass is Nosler 243 win, I use Fed 210M primers & started loading with a 40grn Sierra blitzking with Ramshot hunter, I was able so safely achieve 4600fps before showing pressure signs. I don't have the load data here in front of me but I started by utilizing 220 swift data & worked up from there if my memory recalls correctly. I have left both the blitzking & the Ramshot powder in favor of a Sierra 53gr Match bullet & am in the process of trying various powders for optimal accuracy. Velocity is always there but accuracy has been finicky at this point ~1moa to this point, of course @ +4000fps I can certainly understand why!! This is a new caliber to me as well, the gents i know are using a fast twist bbl with the Hornady 75gr A-Max With either Retumbo or RL-25, most are getting ~3500fps with this combo. I know this isn't much info to start with but I hope I can help you make your decision.

I have a Savage I built to a 22-250ai. I used a 1-8 douglas barrel and am using 75gr v-maxes. I've been impressed with the accuracy and the way it rings the steel plates compared to my 223's. Unfortunately I haven't had a chance to chrono it yet.

I have Sako 22-250 AI 8"twist and 26inch long barrel. What bullets you recommed reodeer size game? I had try now 75gr sirocco and accuracy isnt enough. And rifle shoot really well with 75gr and 77gr berger so gun is ok. Now just need find some good bullets for hunting.

I have a 22-250AI fast twist gun 1-7 built on a 700 Remington and I shoot 75 A-Max bullets as a matter of course.

Were I to build the gun again, it would have a 1-8 twist barrel. The 75s are normally accurate to about 3,200 fps and do not require any higher speed. As a matter of fact I push my loads to just over 3,000 fps for the best accuracy in my gun.

The heavy 224 bullets act like an arrow, once you get them moving, they tend to keep moving and are deadly out to very long distances. With predation permits a buddy of mine uses the 75 and 80 out to 8-900 yards for one shot deer kills at around 3,000 fps MV.

The 75gr at 3025 has the same trajectory as a 50 BMG and on a scope with ballistics cams the 50 BMG cam is the one you use.
