I just bought a 270WSM and plan to load 130 or 140gr bullets in it depending upon what it prefers. I want the most stable powder I can make work due to the varied conditions I will use it in. Home is 1200ft above sea level and fall weather ranges from 80 to 20 degrees. I also hunt in Wyoming at 8-9000ft at 0 degrees. Once I find a load that works here I will probably have Leupold build me a turret for each location. What would you recommend trying?

Here's what I have on hand, but I can get others if there is a better option.
H4831
H4831SC
IMR 4831
H4350
IMR 4350
RETUMBO
H1000
RL 19
RL22

sorry but i would go buy some more powder. The WSMs love RL17 and the 270WSM is no different. I would start with 59 or 60 grains and work up.

I use R-17 with 140/150gr bullets and I would start around 55gr and work up for both max for the 130gr is 62 and around 61gr should be max for the 140. Good luck

Seeing as you have a whole flock of different powders, I'd consider adding 7828ssc to the mix.

However it may be better with 150/160 class bullets than the 130/140s?????

I get the best results with Retumbo and the 140's and R17 with the 110's. With the elevations and temp swings your looking at I would stay with a Hodgen Extreme powder.

Magpro. I load this under the 140 Accubond and get great velocity and will shoot under 1/2" all day.

My pet load is 62 gr RL-19 under a 140gr Accubond, .015 off the lands with a Fed. 215mag primer.
I started load development with 61gr and loaded all the way up to 64gr, but 62 was the most accurate. Not to mention the velocities far surpassed IMR4831.

I load for 3, 270wsm's and all three like between 61-63gr RL-19 and 140 Accubonds, more than any other load combo Ive tried. All 3 are Model-70's, and all 3 shoot sub moa groups.
61-64gr of RL-19 should get you around 31-3200fps+ with a 24'' pipe depending on elevation. My rifle will shoot 64gr (89% load density) but it will only group 4 out of 5 shots sub moa, and primers are slightly flattened. With 62gr all 5 are .6'' groups, and smaller (best to date is .3, 5 shot group) and 0 pressure signs even in 96 degree heat. This is handy because I hunt the brakes of the Snake River in August where temps can soar to 115 degrees plus during August bear season. At 5000' and less, 5-600yds equals a dead elk even in temps in the minus teens.
At 8000ft+ that range extends considerably. Bigngreen has some very helpfull info on velocity, and kinettic energy at that elevation, But remember he's shootin' full throttle loads. Hammer down, and balls out, he's crankin on it(3300+fps!). Not all rifles will handle his loads without serious risk of injury to the shooter and or the firearm. He's nutts, but he knows his rifle intimately, and has worked up to his loads carefully.

Thanks for all the good information.

I checked my loading room, and I do have nearly a full pound of RL 19 as well, I forgot I tried it in a 25-06 and 280 once.

Will the RL 17 or 19 stay stable in the varied temperature, I have had major POI changes with RL 22 in a 300win?

Where can I find the information on the change in powders depending upon temp & velocity? I know my varmint rifles zeroed perfectly here shoot quite a bit high when I go to the mountains for rockchucks.

I've been working up loads for my 270WSM the last couple of weeks with the Hodgdon Extreme powders for the same reasons you mentioned.
69grns of H1000 yielded 3065fps and .69in groups @ 100yds.
61.5grns of H4831SC yielded 2930fps and .86in groups @ 100yds.
The rifle has a 23in barrel and is capable of better groups.
Next up is H4350 and if that doesn't work its onto Magpro.

I've seen some temp issues with R17 in my varmint loads but I usually stay with the Retumbo, H1000 or H4350, all have shoot great groups but only the slow stuff will yield the velocity I'm wanting. Magpro is the velocity king in the 270 WSM as far as I'm concerned, I maxed out at 3420FPS with 140 gr bullets but could not get the accuracy and SD I was looking for so I just stay with Retumbo, extremely low SD with max speed and accuracy :D I go from shooting in -20 to 90 degrees with this load and see no changes!
